ISDA Open Handlers Finals & Murray CDT

We had wonderful weather this past weekend for the ISDA Open Handler Finals/Murray CDT, 2 days of trialling and a great rodeo. The Open Handler Finals was a 10 dog invitational based on year end standings, 2 divisions, judged sheep and point/time cattle. The judge was Marc Christopher of Moody, Missouri and we had an awesome announcer, Tom Frey of Creston Livestock Auctions who holds numerous national titles for his auctioneering skills, including Calgary this past year.

The trial was held in a 4 hour window during the Iowa Rodeo Cowboys Finals Rodeo, at 10:00 we watched Peewee Barrel Racing, followed by miniture bull riding, we were up at 12:00 noon with another go of Peewee Barrels and Bulls right behind us at 4:00. The challange was to keep everything rolling and the spectators entertained and to set up, run 20 run and tear down in time to let the next group in. We nailed it!!!

Many of our handlers mentioned that they were approached by spectators asking about how to go about aquiring a working dog for their own ranch purposes and even to get involved with dog trialing, one handler that lives close by sold a dog that afternoon to a spectator and took a new one in for training.

We could not have done it without all of our generous sponsors and everyone that showed up to volunteer.

The club also sold raffle tickets for a Behlen Dog kennel that Behlen in part provided to the club as an added fund raiser.

The Murray Cattledog trial was held in a pasture just down the road from the rodeo grounds. The pasture was about 150 yards wide by about 350 yards long. The cattle were set from the side at about 250 yards out. The dogs fetched the cattle to the handler then drove them around a huge dirt mound in the corner that you had to climb to see the dog and cattle, it had to be 25 foot high and then cross drive the cattle to a set of gates opposite the dirt pile, cross drive again to the other side of the field and then to a Y-chute in the middle. Then a pen that led to a trailer, when you loaded the trailer you had to stay outside the lead in pen, if your cattle came back out of the pen you lost your points and had to repen to get them back.

The course required good handling, great dog work and team work between the handler and the dog. If the dog lost the cattle back past the set up they could get to a corner over a little hill with a loafing shed an the dog had to dig them out of the loafing shed. The course also had a draw that lead into a ditch that got deeper as you went toward the back of the field.

We saw some really good nursery dogs this weekend, some did better then others but all showed alot of promise.

BTW...in regard to the dirt pile, if you were not careful the cows would climb straight up it and hold up on it. The cattle were a mix of first time bred and open heifers that had been brought in 3 weeks earlier to get some dog exposure. They were used for both the Finals and the Murray trial, many compliments from the handlers about the cattle being some of the best they have trialed on. If the dog handled them fairly and worked them right they would yield, if your dog was wrong and offended them they would be difficult. The dogs had to work to keep them together, we saw some really great dog work this weekend.

The Novice division was held in a small barn yard on some dairy calves.
