A Dog for All Seasons

I finished what I thought was a good book today. It's called A Dog for All Seasons, a memoir by Patti Sherlock. It chronicles her life on a small sheep farm in Idaho with her family and border collie, Duncan. She never trialed, but her dog Duncan was indispensable as a worker for her and obviously her heart dog. The book takes you through hard times and good times. It was very touching and I shed a few tears. I found it a good read. I appreciated getting a glimpse into this lifestyle, and how both difficult and wonderful it could be.

One of my favorite parts of the book was her conversation with the rancher (Charlie Kimball, don't know if that's a real name) who gave her Duncan.

"Need a good dog to help with those sheep?" "If you're going to grow your business," Charlie said, "you just about have to have a good dog."

"Could a dog keep the sheep back from the mangers when I'm feeding?" I asked.

"Of course," Charlie said.

"How?"

"The dog doesn't let the sheep eat until you say it's okay."

"But how do you train the dog to do that?"

Charlie looked puzzled. "You tell the dog not to let the sheep in" "When you've got a good dog, you just tell it what you want it to do and it does it."

I nodded. I could get a video on training sheepdogs.
