A bit embarrassing....

Recommended Posts

Cerbie pees on his foot. There I said it....

Cerbie, my neutered ~7 month old male (whom I love to pieces) has a weird tendancy to pee on one of his front legs/feet. He's not doing it on purpose but sometimes the leg is in the way and it gets it. At the very least, the leg is in the "splash zone". He only cocks his leg a bit and seems completely oblivious to it when it happens. I, however, am not. A towel sits on the back patio to wipe him down.

He was neutered very early by the rescue where we got (8 weeks or sooner) him if that is a factor.

I don't know if there is anything we can do training wise but it would be nice if it were to cease....

not unusual: I had a Dalmatian who did it. He mostly quit when he got to hiking his leg when he peed (changed the trajectory) but still occasionally did it.

Does Cerbie hike at all? I know he is neutered but when he gets a little older he may start lifting his leg (heck, my *girl* dog does).

He only hikes a leg maybe 3" off the ground. A weak effort compared to the full "banking airplane" stance I've seen in other dogs.

I'm not really worried about it but it does elicit a lot of "Ewwwwww!" responces.

Some boys are just built wrong -- Our old Westie would always pee on himself. Luke does it only occasionally. Kaiser has a habit I consider worse -- He hikes his leg to pee on a bush, then turns around, brushes against it and pees again. Gee, thanks for getting pee all over yourself, buddy.

My dog pees so high that occasionally he's almost tipped himself over. Also embarrassing.

And my biggest embarrassing confession of the week: we went to visit my parents. My brother's dog had stayed there for a week. I went to see what Buddy was up to, and he was UP TO OVERMARKING THE COUCH WITH HIS OWN SCENT, if you know what I mean. Grr.

Luckily, it was the old couch in the playroom, where no one really hangs out.

Oy.

He needs more miles (or gallons) of experience

And what's up with them starting to walk while still peeing - you know, he's got so much to do, so many other places to mark... who has time to wait till the jet's over?!

Ewww, yeah. Thanks for an opportunity to vent on this topic!

If Jo (our girl) is sniffing a bush, Jake will go over to sniff it too. He'll then hike his leg high and pee on both the bush and Jo's head!

I suppose I should be glad I'm not down there sniffing the bush too.

Our aussie does this too but only in our yard. In the yard he doesn't lift his leg high, he sort of does half squat/half lift a leg and the angle is just right so that it hits his front leg. Out on a walk, he lifts his leg high and it misses his leg.

The first time I walked Mick & Sinead on a coupler, he peed on her head. They've sorted things out since then.

The most embarassing is Mick is always that kid who pees in the pool at the dog park. Yep, he'll be lounging just fine in the water, but if another dog tries to join him, he will do one of two things, snarl until the dog leaves OR stand up, lift his leg high and pee right in the pool, THEN lay back down in the water...

My coonhound has always peed on himself. He has kind of learned to switch positions when he starts to pee on himself but doesn't always do it. He then licks his front leg to clean it off!

My border collie/mix? puppy jumped up on the couch one day to see me and peed right on my hand and leg. My fiance laughed for an hour about that. I didn't find it quite so funny

Zorro is five years old and there's nothing wrong with his back legs but he usually squats when he pees instead of hiking his leg. His foster from the rescue group said that could be a sign he was neutered at a very young age. ge. Don't know if that's true, but an interesting theory.

I think the leg lifting is a learned behavior that has little to do with neuter age. Odin (and my previous dog) were neutered at young ages (<6 months, almost pediatric in Odin's case), and both lift/lifted their legs. Odin did the "puppy squat" until this Xmas, when he stayed with the dogsitter's family, which included a pack of 4 other males, for 2 weeks. Now he's a veteran leg-lifter and he also marks, as in, he likes to save it on walks and pee some on especially smell areas rather than just emptying his bladder all at once. He learned from watching them!

Yup, Luke was a squatter until Kaiser came along --- He still often pees like a horse, but he's gotten to be a major marker on off-leash walks. It's kind of funny because he'll mark on something and Kaiser will high-tail it over to pee on top of whatever Luke pee'd on. Too bad Luke is 80 lbs to Kaiser's 16 lbs, so guess who has more capability to mark stuff? lol

When we first got our girl, Jo, she peed like a proper lady dog. But then after a couple of months of walking with our former male dog, Zap, she started lifting her leg to pee on bushes too!

What do they call that, am-pee-dextrous?

Her usual style was to lift her leg, then sort of swing it around over the bush into a final semi-squat position.

Both of my girls will hike a leg to pee on something interesting. Of course Ben will too so there's an entire pack heirarchy order of pee that comes into play when we pass something really interesting on a walk - Pip, Nell and Ben sniff and pee in order. If Ben gets overzealous, he pees on the girls' heads and then repees after they have peed. Fun

I'm glad to hear everyone else has these problems. When my girl Kelly squats to pee, my boy Willy sometimes

can't wait for her to finish so he pees on her while she's still squatting! Kelly has gotten wise to him now and will

take off when she sees him coming. Once she even bit him. Serves him right.
