tegansmom23
Right now I am feeding my bc's diamond lamb and rice but tegan has really bad dry skin and jess poops 5 times a day and its not very solid. i was thinking either pmi exclusive, taste of the wild, or canine caviar. there are other brands i like but I live in a small town and the closest big town to me if fairly small to so there are not many places to get other foods but these are the best ones in the area. thanks
Jedismom
If you do a search on the boards you will find lots of past discussions on dog food. For dry skin, I give a salmon oil supplement daily. For the soft stools, you'll have to experiment some with different foods to find out what works best for your dog. For example, I have tried several top end no grain varieties to give Cadi, but she seems to need some rice in her diet, so she does well with Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It's a pretty good inexpensive kibble. Jedi can do no grain ok as long as it's not the TOTW Buffalo/Venison one. He does fine on their fowl variety. He also does well on Orijen, but it gave Cadi terrible gas. So you see?
SecretBC
I find Taste of the Wild to be a very nice, economical grain-free food and my dogs do very well on it. I tend to rotate all three flavors with the various flavors of the Natural Balance LID (limited ingredient diet).
BustopherJones
This may be of some interest: Dog Food Reviews Personally, I have a simple rule: If you can buy it at a "Big Box" store, DON'T!
juliepoudrier
I agree with Georgia--different dogs will respond differently to different brands of food, so you'll have to do some experimenting. Foods with beet pulp in it will help firm up stool, but ideally you'd like to find a food that wouldn't cause loose stools in the first place. I like the Chicken Soup, and if the stores you shop at carry Diamond products (which includes Taste of the Wild), they ought to be able to get the chicken soup for you as well. J. J. Jack likes Chicken Soup and does very well on it. I had tried several other premium foods but he has done best on CS. I like their dry foods for cats also--one eats their Senior Cat/Hairball food and the other eats CS Adult. I find it to be reasonably priced and my critters eat it consistently. Izzysdad
I just switched to Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice and everyone loves and is doing well on it. I've noticed Zoey's coat has improved a bit, but she was eating some form of Purina at her foster home... I pay $26.99 for a 40lb bag at a local store. It's to get a good grain free food and get more lb's for the dollar! Tim
tegansmom23
Thanks everyone I bought taste of the wild today but if they dont like that I am going to switch to chicken soup. its so much easier for me to tall other people what to feed. rushdoggie
And you might consider adding a bit of virgin coconut oil for the dog with the dry coat. It helps my "allergic to everything he breathes and fleas and always itchy" dog tremendously.
Sue R
Okay, Rushdoggie, about how much of the virgin coconut oil do you give daily? My Celt came to me at seven weeks of age with very dry and flaky skin, which was put pretty much right with supplemental fat in his diet (beef or bacon fat, fish oil, Vit E) but, as he's aged, he has developed some allergies (apparently fleas are one of them). He's on an anti-histamine which doesn't solve the problem but which helps, but I have the coconut oil and would love it if it helped him with the itchies. My Ross is a bigger male, I give him about 2 tablespoons 3 times a week. I set the jar in a pan of hot tap water when I start fixing food and then use a tablespoon measuring spoon to get 2 spoons of liquid (it melts at about 90 degrees F I think) that I pour on his food. I also am trying to use it in human cooking, so if there's some in a pan after I cook eggs or something I will let the dogs lick the pan (once its cooled, obviously). I realize not everyone will have the same housekeeping standards or lack thereof that we do... You also might see if he just likes it. Ross won't just eat it but one of my Papillons loves it and will eat it right off a spoon. The flea thing is a bi*ch for us, I hate treating for fleas I can't even really see, but if I keep Frontline on all the critters Ross has no symptoms. If I don't, he will scratch and scratch and even act all freaked out. I resisted the diagnosis of flea allergy for ages because I almost never saw a flea on any animal, and no evidence of any kind of infestation at all. SecretBC
I give my two dogs who actually eat on a regular basis (the little guy is a free-feeder) corn oil/vegetable oil daily, as well as fish oil capsules. Their coats are amazing.

If you look for free shipping, you can save some money. Even without free shipping, it's cheaper than paying for fuel for the 200 miles round trip. You can find all the different brands at all different prices. The only dog food that wasn't super market variety (mostly corn) was Eukenuba (or whatever). It was far away at a feed store, but if I do everything in one day it will pay to drive up there. Then I looked at the label and see it's the same as the super market food - same except for the price. Now I give myself a break and order everything I can on line. Gloria Atwater
I second the recommendation for Chicken Soup. I've a friend who switched from the Diamond Lamb & Rice to their chicken & rice, and that helped with loose poops. But right now I feed a mix of Chicken Soup and Premium Edge. The PE has done *wonders* for my kids' coats and their stool is nicely firm with it. Cheers ~ Gloria P.S. My vet recommends a dollop of plain or vanilla yogurt to help with unsettled innards. bcnewe2
I just looked at Amazon for dog food, the free shipping sounded good. But what we feed was at least $25 higher than I can buy it in a store. I can get Taste of the Wild for $35.00 at tractor supply with a coupon or on sale. I foudn the same for $65.00 on Amazon. I could see paying a few bucks more for ease of purchase but that's ridiculous!
skiba
I feed Innova and Oliver does great on it. (He was on Eukanuba when he was a pup, big difference when I switched him) Its pretty pricey though, we spend $50 on a big bag. I've been keeping a close eye on the ingredients since P&G now own Natura - total disappointment.
