Female dog mounting inanimate objects

Recommended Posts

I've seen male dogs do this before, but never a female dog, and with the exception of Mick, I've always had female dogs. Mick, though, usually ends up being the humpee dog...including once getting mounted by an 8-week-old Maremma pup...not one of his finest moments. Although, it was hilarious.

However, today, I've caught her humping random objects twice. First, a big box of kitty litter, and then a jacket that was laying by the door. I could understand it, if she mounted Mick trying to sort out pack dynamics, but random things is just throwing me off. Could she be getting ready to go into heat? She's not spayed yet, as she picked up kennel cough at animal control, and they fostered her out to me before spaying her (her time was up). She'll be getting spayed in a couple weeks.

Yep, bitches in heat will often hump each other, and could possibly hump inanimate objects. Have you noticed any spotting (blood) or her vulva beginning to swell? If she is going into heat, you'll probably want to delay the spay surgery because of the possibility of excess bleeding during heat and the hormonal changes that occur with heat.

Thanks. I just checked her out, and her vulva is swollen. She's not spotting yet, though. Guess I'll be keeping a very close eye on her. At least Mick is neutered, so that's one less worry.

Fortunately, the spay hasn't been scheduled yet. The rescue group and I have been working on a date that works for both of us. They want to do it at their vet in NYC, so they were trying to find somebody who could pick her up from me on the NJ side of the Hudson River on one of my days off work. That's perfectly fine with me, because I absolutely hate driving in NYC.

Wait to spay until 3 months after she goes out of heat to avoid the potential of rare hormonally induced behavioral problems.

My last Border collie would happily hump anyone's leg, given half a chance. All you needed to do was say, "Molly, are you horny?" (An example of "capturing" - she was smart enough that she picked up on the word and associated it with the behavior in nothing flat).

I know, I should have had her on David Letterman's "Stupid Pet Tricks".

But she kept this up for YEARS after she'd been spayed.

I'm sorry, but that's hilarious. Growing up we had a German Shepherd who would hump one of the cats on occasion. We figured it was to show dominance. The cat was a big ragdoll cat and couldn't care less. They were a sweet couple, though. Cheyenne (who was spayed late) took Cuddles in as a kitten. When he was little, she used to carry him by the scruff into her crate and groom him. He grew up really bonded to her, and they would always sleep in the crate together. And, she was the best dog ever to keep the cats in line. Whenever they were doing something like scratching on the furniture, she'd go over and whack them with her paw and roll them before we could even yell at the cat.

I miss that dog so much. She had her issues, like being extremely aggressive towards strangers and animals she didn't know, but with family and family pets, she was just a big mush. One of our cats used to beat her up...a tiny little 8lb feral cat that never totally tamed would routinely kick her 95lb ass...never stopped Cheyenne from trying everyday to make friends with her, though.
