Dog recovering from broken muzzle

My friend's Golden Retriever, Maddie ran full tilt into a woven wire fence in August. She had a U shaped fracture of her muzzle - behind her nose. She has had clear, bubbly discharge from her nose off and on since then. Xrays don't seem to reveal anything. She has been treated with antibiotics and prednizone. The prednizone works but Maddie suffers from pica (eating everything and anything according to my friend). Maddie is now on Effederin. My friend says she sounds awful - almost like the sound of congestive heart failure. Her heart is fine according to the vet.

. It doesn't sound like the vet has any other ideas and also told her that he's never seen anything quite like this.

I have suggested she try another vet. (bearing in mind that we aren't in a really populated area overrun with vets) While I don't think money is a real issue, she has already spent $2,000.00 without much progress.

Does anyone have any other ideas???

I wonder if the sinuses were damaged at all when the bones were broken and are causing chronic issues. Its also possible that a bone chip or something broke off and is sitting in the sinuses causing the inflammation (like a foreign body reaction). That could explain why prednisone helps since if it was an infection, theoretically pred would make it worse if anything. Might be worth redoing rads, or even finding someone with an endoscope to look up there.

Thanks, BCJetta, I did forward your thoughts to the owner. I'm sure that she will take Maddie in for some additional workup but to a different vet.

Recommend a trip to the big city and find a specialty hospital with board certified specialists. It is hugely expensive, but it is what I did after 6 months of inadequate treatment by the local vet. Once there, I got results in short order, as in 4 days.

Best wishes for the dog's recovery.

.... They took Maddie back to the vet. A biospy was done. It appears that Maddie has cancer :D Thye are sending the biospy away and the final results should be back this week :D Maddie's a lovely dog and only 8 years old.
