County Requirements

In the county I just moved into, dogs are required to be licensed with them. (I'm not within city limits, and therefore, city requirements do not apply to me.) In order to obtain a license for a dog, you need to have a current rabies vaccination. I have a 12 year old rescue dog I have no intention of shooting up with anything. Has anyone run up against this issue, and have you found a peaceful resolution? Doing nothing is probably not an option, as Animal Control seems to have a bee in their bonnet and they are going around charging people with misdemeanors (yes, misdemeanors, not citations) for not having their dogs licensed with the county.

Ha! What a timely post. I came home yesterday to two lovely yellow letters informing me my dogs aren't licensed and I owe an extra $12.00 a dog in penalty fees for not registering them with the county. Apparently our vets are required to turn over all vaccination records to the county. Thus Poke and Ceana got their rabies a few months ago and we get the letter for not registering them. DH and I have been dragging our feet. We just don't like the county requiring to have your dog registered. Yes I know it helps pay for shelters and helps you find your lost dog, but so does the donation DH makes from each pay check to the county and the microchips each dog has. :D Call us paranoid, but there is just something so icky feeling about them having that much info on our dogs. Why don't we pay a dog owning fee and not a fee per dog? -steps off of soap box-

We got away with not having Ceana registered for 3 years and Poke for 2 years. I don't see any way to get around it now, since they will probably show up at my house if I do not do it. -sigh- Oh well.... they haven't found Sita yet!....although it might just be easier to do hers at the same time and just pay all 3 once a year.

ETA: Our county requires the vet to sign paper work stating they gave a rabies shot and there is a little sticker from the batch of shots that has to go on the form. No fudging here.

My county has recently started doing this, too. And it's a pain in the a$$ because every time I vaccinate a foster dog, I get a letter informing me that I have to get a license. They are also now sending me notices about dogs that were vaccinated a year ago, informing me that I need to renew their license or send them a letter stating that I no longer have the dog. I used to get licenses for the foster dogs when they were vaccinated because my rescue vet included them at no charge. But, now he is charging and it's ridiculous to license every foster dog when most end up going to homes that are outside my county. Plus, it just annoys me that I have explain every single dog to them now in order to avoid a penalty. The funny thing is, my own dogs are not licensed, but I'm sure that'll have to change as soon as they are due for their next rabies vaccinations.

It makes me nervous to be so prominent on their radar screen, too. I'm afraid they're going to want to investigate me because of the number of dogs that my vet sends them info on, and though I think that I'm in compliance with all the AC's regulations (except for that part about not having current licenses on my own dogs), it still makes me nervous. I guess the work around for that would be to find a vet in a different county to take the dogs to for their rabies vaccinations. Then, my county AC wouldn't have to know.

Said county isn't so smart. I have received a similar note for Senneca, even though she was wearing an up to date tag. Seems she was entered twice into the system; once as a spayed female and one as intact. Oh and guess who did the entering? Said county's animal control when Senneca was brought in as a stray. It took a fairly long phone call to the license office to sort it all out.

Licenses are required here, but there is not much in the way of enforcement unless your dog is roaming or being a nuisance. It cost $12/3 years. I don't mind licensing with the county, but I think it's going a bit far to require vets to turn over records to the county. I wonder if one could challenge this is any way due to the fact that medical records should be kept private.

Ours is $10/dog for 5 years s/n doesn't even matter!

As for the rabies vax question (I don't vax for it either)... I know a few friends have had their vets write a letter stating that their dog due to health issues is unable to take the rabies vax. Given your dogs age would your vet do that for you? It really is in the dogs best interest (typically) not to do that vax.

jeeze I dunno what I would do in that case! licences are required here too, but I dont do it..and they dont make a very good case for it(they say they will return a licenced dog to your door no fine and no questions asked...then in the same breath continue to say that your dog will be returned to your door no fine and no questions asked if they have ANY ID whatsoever) they dont tie the licence to anything, they dont check unless your are being investiagated for something else, and they are bloody expensive! sure $20 per year for a s/n(or show dog, $60 a year for an intact non-show dog) dog is fine and dandy if you have ONE dog..but for me it would be $140 a year for the lovely priviledge of giving the city all my dogs info that should the dog laws change could be very easily turned against me? then our city wonders why only 24% of the citys dogs are licenced and lets not forget that 2 small town vets are included in the low cost spay/neuter program in my city, so most people get their dogs fixed outside of town, where licencing is of coarse not even questioned

It's required here as well. We do keep up on the rabies vac., as we have had a few cases of sick animals around here.

Yup. After reading the story of a dog who was quarantined for 3 months after a bat who had died from rabies was found in the owners yard, this is the one vaccination I'd be sure to keep up to date on.

I do license my dogs in this county, mostly because that way, they're entered into the county's system- with photo, if I send it in. I live on an island, the population is small, and my dogs don't always wear collars. A photo recognition could be their ticket home.

In any case, we just have to write on the form when the dog's rabies vax expires. No vet signature needed, no papers shown. If you "forget," writing "current" on the line works

My vet is in a different county on the mainland... not sure where they'd send the notification even if they had to.

Yes, the laws here are pretty messed up. For instance, in this county, on the animal control website, it tells you you're allowed to have 3 dogs, and anything more than that, you need to contact planning & zoning about a kennel license.

When you contact planning & zoning, they tell you that you don't need to apply for a kennel license unless you have 6 or more dogs. How much is a kennel license? Planning and zoning can't answer that. They only know that you need a Conditional Use Permit. To apply for a Conditional Use Permit, it's $2000! That gets you the right to be heard. That does not guarantee you they will grant you the right to get a kennel license. The license itself is another $500. If you're denied the Conditional Use Permit, you have to APPLY to get up to 90% of your money back.

How many dogs are you allowed with a kennel license? That depends on what the county commissioners decide.

The state laws here state a maximum of 15.

So who is right? I have no idea.
