Ever since I adopted my female dog Jake, I've been trying to figure out her breed. I'm almost certain she is a border collie. A lot of people say Australian Cattle dog, but she just doesn't have the right body type for it. She's super intelligent, really high energy, can jump to about 5 feet, likes to play fetch, runs like a bat outta hell. Her eyes definitely say border collie to me. But I need a second opinion. The only reason people call her a Cattle dog I think is because of her heavy freckles on the parts where a normal BC would be white. Sorry about the qualities of the pictures, they were taken with my cell phone, and it's hard to catch her when she's not moving.

It's hard to tell from those photos, but two of them reminded me of a German Shorthaired Pointer. Border Collies CAN be ticked, however. Her muzzle in the front view just doesn't look like a Border Collie at all. Photos can be deceiving at certain angles, so don't take this as gospel.

Welcome! This is a great source of information and support, and I hope you stay to participate and learn, and contribute.

A "normal" Border Collie can be any of many colors/coat combinations. Selected for what it does (stockworking ability) and not what it looks like, allows the breed to encompass a variety of appearances.

Best wishes!

Not trying to be smart here, but this description could apply to any number of athletic, high-energy breeds and so can't really be used as a definitive descriptor of the border collie breed.

That said, border collies come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and ticking is certainly part of the package. The dog in the photos doesn't scream "border collie" to me, but that doesn't mean she's not, or a mix.

Cute dog! I think I agree with the German Shorthair mix. With what, I don't know, could be Border Collie. I don't think anyone would argue much if you called her a BC mix.

I would be very comfortable saying this dog is half border collie and half austrailian blue heeler. Very smart energetic dogs who have a great ability to jump, which most dogs do, but tend to have the spotted or roan appearance like this dog has in places. They also "tend" to be slightly heavier boned than a BC which appears a little in your dog. Great mix!

When I saw the head-on shot I thought BC/GSP mix also...GSP are very springy dogs :oP

I love that first picture in the car, where your arm is coming around her with the camera!. That profile says a lot to me -- personality plus! There's something about her face and the curve of her body that says BC to me, so I would guess she's a BC or BC mix. BCs are so darn diverse in appearance (there's a whole nother thread about the issue of folks not thinking people's border collies ARE border collies...).

Welcome aboard!

Another vote for German Shorthair Pointer mix - coloring, head shape, everything. GSP are notoriously full of energy and zest of life.
