Dear Owners, Trainers, and Handlers:

The Canine Behavioral Genetics Project would like to thank the organizers, competitors, and spectators of the 2009 USBCHA NationalSheepdog Finals for their interest, assistance, and support in Klamath Falls. With your help, we were able to collect over 100 blood samples from working Border Collies in only two days. These samples will be used for ongoing genetic studies of late-onset deafness, epilepsy, and noise phobia in the Border Collie.

We also appreciate the interest and excellent questions from the attendees to our Wednesday evening presention hosted by the ABCA, during which doctoral candidate Jennifer Yokoyama and Dr. Mark Neff shared some preliminary results from these ongoing studies. In particular, we have been able to identify a strong region of interest for late-onset deafness, and are currently working hard to narrow this region down for the identification of genes associated with this condition, which is of particular interest and concern to owners and trainers of working Border Collies.

Analyses and sample collection for these projects are ongoing, and the more samples we have to work with -- from both affected and unaffected dogs -- the sooner we will be able to answer the most crucial questions about these conditions in Border Collies. We encourage trial and other event organizers who are interested in hosting blood draws for DNA sampling to contact us at k9behavioralgenetics@lppi.ucsf.edu, and for interested owners, trainers, and handlers to consult our website at k9behavioralgenetics.com if you are interested in independently sending blood samples to us from both affected and unaffected dogs.

Thank you very much,

Steve Hamilton, Mark Neff, Jennifer Yokoyama, Melanie Chang, and Alison Ruhe

I think we should be thanking all of you for the long hours of work all of you have put into the project. It was a great discussion with a lot of good info.

Keep up the good work :@)

Thanks to Melanie and her friends who stopped by my trailer to do the blood draw on most of the dogs from my kennels. I still owe Melanie a couple of pedigrees (do you remember which ones?)

They had a great talk on Genetics. The word at your table it was well written for our level "Genetics for Dummies"....

We especially like that one mosquito that was crawling around on the screen

They were tireless workers and always had a smile.

Diane

Yes, Melanie, you already have blood samples and pedigrees from Celt and Megan. We have not had her tested but Megan appears to have a very significant hearing loss that seemed to appear around age five or six. Is there something I can do to contribute to this study with regards to her?
