sea4th
Chuck, my rescue boy, who came in with old Bob, is still intact. After getting his basic medicals done, with money being really tight right now, I thought I'd have him neutered by the end of the year sometime. Well, the end of the year is now and I've got to cough up the $$. Earlier this week when I put Chuck out in the dog run for the day, I noticed him licking -- you know, that male dog-type licking. He usually doesn't do that and so I went over and had a look. His testicles looked distended and swollen and were very sensitive to the touch. Part of them looked infected. This was Thursday. I popped a cephelexin down his throat and put a warm compress on the affected area, washed it off and put some betadine on it. I did it again that night and again the next day. And today we went into the vet. The injury wasn't bilateral. It only affected one side, but that one side showed that the scrotal sac had been ripped -- when and how, I don't know -- and had atrophied, leaving the testicle itself exposed. That was what appeared swollen and distended to me. That poor dog. When it happened, I know he was in some pain and the only thing I can think of is when he used to sail over the six foot chain link enclosure, he must have caught himself. I do remember blood in the dog run at one time and having checked everyone out at the time, I couldn't find anything. That must have been when it happened. So now, Chuck goes in on Thursday, to be neutered professionally and not a do-it-yourself job. Ouch. If I had had it done sooner, I wouldn't be writing Chuck's tale of woe here. Poor Chuckster. He's been a real trooper throughout this whole thing.
workindogs
He's lucky he only caught an expendable appendage jumping a fence....he could have hurt himself worse. Glad he's ok and the vet will be able to complete his neuter for him. I've heard of another dog that jumped a fence and required emergency neuter. Not advisable to jump fences. Sue R
Dogs aren't the only ones at risk - my older brother tried sailing over a chainlink fence and it is only due to the injury being a little bit to one side that he's given his wife four wonderful boys.
