sitter
Hi, I have ran into a person here in town who claims to be able to register my dog on line for a $35 fee. All she requires is that I complete a form. I am Not disabled per a medical provider, nor is my dog "service dog trained" she says that does not matter, because once my dog is regisered, it is illegal for anyone to ask me about my disability, and all I have to do is present my tag & card, with the registration number on it where they can check on line to see the dog's registration... is this legal, ethical, right for her to sell this service? sitter
juliepoudrier
Sitter, You've posted this question in the wrong section. This discussion area is for questions related to stockdog training. If you want some input on your question, you should repost it in the general discussion section. BTW, it sounds like a scam to part you from your money to me. My dog Jin is a service dog in training and is registered with the state. This lady is completely wrong. True your dog does not have to be trained however it does have to be able to "assist with or help to mitigate a medical or psychiatric condition (PTSD for example)" as defined by the ADA. Tags and cards are BS and anyone can make an SD ID card in their computer. While they may exist (charging as much as $250) legally there is no authority that establishes service dog registries although some states like Calif offer a special tag for a service dog that is available through animal control. Jin has one. People who register your SD are in it for the bucks only and have no legal standing at even in a court room. While it may be legal to sell this service it is not ethical. Frankly you can make an ID card on your computer that carries as much weight as any SD registry. SD law is undergoing changes right now. The main reason is to put a stop to people who are trying to claim my dog is an SD without actually having or needing one. There are certain behavior requirements for an SD in public and not all laws apply to dogs in training. There are also no set standards for SD training although most people use the standards set out by guide dogs for behavior. The laws also vary from state to state. There are hundreds of law suits over SDs right now, lots of confusion and no real answers. Here is an FAQ that may have a few answers If you want to know more look up Service Dgos in the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) and advies your contact that what she's doing is running a scam.
