house breaking issue

Recommended Posts

Hello all, it's been along time scince I have been on here, but I finally have the internet again. First of our oldest maggie is doing great now. She was very sick when we first got her, and some of you came to the rescue with some info and we are greatfull.....and now we have another one haha this one is black and white instead of red and white but we love him just as much...for some reason he will not house train, he is almost 9 months old and as long as we are home he is fine goes to the door when he wants out. Now not all the time but when we leave for work in the morning and we come home he has pooped on the floor and we don't know how to correct this because we aren't home to catch him in the act. I hate to leave him in his kennel when we are at work, but it's getting alittle annoying cleaning up poop when we get home...any info would be greatly appreciated..............photo's of them together will be comming shortly as soon as I get the camera hooked up to this new computer.

First, do a search on housebreaking and you will find a lot of good info and advice. Second, start crating, kenneling or at least confining to a small room when you leave. Personally, there are very few 9 month olds I would leave loose unsupervised. I like knowing they and my belongings are safe while I'm away. As they mature and settle down, I leave them loose in small increments until they are loose all day. Quinn was somewhere between 21 months and 2 years by the time he was loose all day while I was at work. My dogs all still love their crates and will go to them on their own, so I don't think they viewed being crated when young as a horrible fate.

We keep anything they can get into out of reach so I'm not worried about them hurting themselves or our stuff, Maggie was out of her kennel by about the same age and we never had any problems with her and she still lay's in it from time to time. I know keeping him in the kennel is probally best for him and us, but I feel bad leaving him in there when it's so hot out...he upset's his water and the fan is just blowing hot air around, so I feel better about him having the run of the house so he can at least find somewhere's cool to lay.........we where wondering if it was a male thing? I know he goes out and follow's maggie and pee's over hers.

It's not a male thing.

Crate him--that is the answer you are looking for. He is showing you that he is not ready to be unsupervised for so long.

My 11-year-old is crated while I am at work. Not for housetraining issues or because I am afraid he will chew inappropriate items, but because there is a chance he will pick a fight with my younger male. Not all dogs conform to the same schedule or have the same issues, so IMO it's best to be just a little bit flexible about implementing house rules.

What about getting a water dish that will attach to the inside of the crate so he can't tip it over - something like this or this? I would that and place his crate in the coolest part of the house while you're gone. The more he has an opportunity to go in the house, the more ingrained the habit will become

Ditto everything Laurae says. If by kennel, you mean outside, if it is hot, you need to secure his water somehow so he can't tip it over. You don't want to risk heat stroke. Otherwise, you need to crate him inside where it is cooler.

Also, don't forget that 9 month old dogs are still maturing and sometimes come up with new hobbies/activities seemingly out of the blue. He may not be chewing anything now, but in a fit of adolescent boredom, he might find gnawing on your favorite pair of shoes or the sofa looks like a fun way to spend the afternoon.

make an ice bowl or something that will melt slowly for him and put that in the crate. 2 liter soda bottles are ok 3/4 filled and frozen with caps on to lie next to and lick the condensation off of. we do that for the bunny rabbit too. Bess is over a year, and I either leave her on the deck that has a gate...sort of a very large doggie playpen, and she will wait until the ice has melted enough to tip the bowl and let the ice slide out and chases the ice bowl around until it melts, and then plays with the metal bowl! or in her crate inside with a frozen jug if it is just too hot.

keep in mind, many folks (well, I did anyway when I started out) tend to use the word kennel when they are meaning crate. Is kennel to you an outside small cage enclosure? or are you meaning crate? (I still tell her kennel up when what I really mean is get in your crate.)

Opps, I guess I ment crate. Anyway I did rig up a water dish out of an old tupperware container and I ziptied it do the crate door and I put a fan in front of it so he had some cool air. I guess we will have to crate him and try again another time, he was real bad yesterday, he actually did it while we where home, we were playing around on the bed (he likes to chase my hand under the sheets) and he jumped down went to the next room for a sec then came back, then the smell hit me haha. I wasn't happy and he even knew he did wrong cause he came in the room with his ears down and everything so I showed him the mess and said no and put him outside for a bit.
