Torn Nail

Recommended Posts

I have to say when it rains it pours...

I've had my new foster to the vet for roundworms. Then Jedi (unrelated coincidence) had tapeworms. Everyone got Drontal. Jedi started favoring his back right leg yesterday. I looked it over carefully, felt it, nothing. It went away. Then this morning he's acting very unJedi-like and stopping in the middle of a run to get a ball and turning around to just look at me. Then I notice he's periodically holding up his front right paw. So in checking that out, I notice the nail has pulled away somehow and has separated from the quick. At least I think that's what I'm looking at. I cleaned it, put some Neosporin on it and wrapped it. I don't want to mess with it, so I guess it's another vet visit tommorow. Thanks Mary for the earlier email.

Jedi is a worrier. He's sticking to me like glue which he typically never does. He seems to be in some pain and can't get comfortable. I don't know what else to do for him right now. So some good thoughts going his way would be greatly appreciated.

Celt has a particular nail that occasionally tears and, when it does, it is very painful. He has also abraded to the point of ripping off sections of pads and taken nails down well into the quick. While it is very painful (and he was feeling quite sorry for himself and sticking closer to me than usual, like Jedi), he seems to recover very quickly in terms of the pain moderating within a very few days.

Hopefully, Jedi will recover as quickly but you may wish to reduce activity for a few days until he seems far enough on the mend. Best wishes!

It does seem like when it rains, it pours! Sorry for all the bad vet luck, Georgia.

My Jack ripped a nail once, too. Crazy dog caught it on the fence, jumping for squirrels. Of course we discovered it at 11:00 PM, so had to wait until morning for the vet. It was obviously quite painful, but he was fine in a few days of rest and keeping it clean (he looked cute in his sock). The vet just had to trim it up, since part of the nail was hanging off and it was too painful for us to touch.

Anyway, give Jedi a kiss, I hope he's feeling better soon!

Poor Jedi. Ripping a nail is such a painful thing. Good thing it's easily fixed, though, and they recover pretty quickly.

I just realized after reading this post, that you asked me about wormer medication. What I have is Pyranel. It wil effective against roundworms and hookworms, but not tapeworms. I'd be happy to send it to you to treat the puppy, but you'll still need something different for the tapeworms.

Well, we're back home and Jedi was able to keep his nail for now. It was still well attached and a little split, but the quick was really swollen. His paw has a pretty yellow bandage on it now, which he has to wear for 2 days in addition to taking antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. I'm so proud of him for not trying to chew it off! They wanted to give me this great big bag to tie over his foot to keep it from getting wet when he goes out to pee and stuff. I elected not to take it though, because I know Jedi and he would be very "suspicious" of something like that and would probably never pee with it on. If anyone has a better idea for this, please let me know.

Mary, since the fecal came out neg. on Finn, I guess I better stick with the Drontal. Thanks, though.

To keep it dry you could always try some of those rubber booties. They're like little balloons you just pull on. Supposed to be disposable but I've been told they can often be used a few times before you need to put on a new set.

Poor guy. Blaze torn his nail a while back (what HASN'T this dog done yet? Lol *knock on wood*). The vet gave him a quick shot to sedate him, and he fixed it up fast. Blaze was back running around within a few hours after the sedation had worn off.

You could put a small bag on his foot, then put a sock over it so he doesn't see the bag and it won't make noise.

Jedi's nail are is worse this morning so off to the vet I go. It looks like they're going to have to sedate him and take it off. I really should probably have had them do that earlier. Jedi doesn't want to come out of his crate. He just wants to lay around and lick his paw. Ahhh...the guilt.

Does the nail grow back ok? Anything I should look out for?

Thanks,

Georgia

Sorry to hear that this did not improve for you. My Celt has a "funky" nail that I believe was badly torn as a youngster and (like one of my nails years ago that had been damaged), that's the one that gets a bit ouchy every now and then if it gets abraded too much and it tends to split a bit. Almost always, it's just fine.

Best wishes!
