This is almost unbelievable

Recommended Posts

So I'm sitting here at my desk at home doing the usual corporate email garbage, and my library has a window that looks onto the driveway. I look outside to see a dog by one of the garage doors. I think, hmmm that's odd. The dog turns and it's Tobey! I thought he was laying behind my chair like always but it was Izzy. Now he's out there dancing and barking at the door to be let in. I have a fenced in backyard and when I'm home I usually leave the slider door open so they can run and play, etc. I also live on a pretty busy street and going out front off leash is a huge no-no. I run around and open the garage door and he comes racing inside. He must have scared the crap out of himself. I can't believe he had the wherewithall to come around to the door. I go out back and he has dug a hole and crawled under the fence. He was a good 100 yards from the garage! The fence that we have has some gaps at the bottom so all he had to do was dig down about 4 inches and that's just what he did. It'll be three weeks tomorrow and I haven't seen him dig one hole yet.

I've been out back with plywood and welded wire fence closing things off as best I can for now. Looks like I'm going to have to get more wire fence and bury it in the ground. There goes my weekend!

BTW that was such a shock and fright, I don't think I'll be able to have kids!

Eek! How scary (although from a reader's perspective, also kind of hilarious.) I'm very glad that he had the wherewithal to realize that being by himself in the front yard is a scary scary thing. But there is something comical about the way dogs (and kids) dive head first into an adventure only to realize what a terrible idea it was as soon as they achieve their first objective. I can just imagine him digging and thinking "This will be great. I can crawl under the fence!" And then once he's on the other side realizing "Oh crap! Now what do I do?!? DAAAAAAADDD Help me!!!!!"

Must be a full moon or something! Scooter got out a few days ago, when the neighbor's son accidentally left the door open. Fortunately, he headed right for the door in the garage that leads to the back yard and not out the overhead door that was open, which leads to the front yard and the street. I know how you feel! Scared the shitzu out of me! Good thing Tobey decided he'd rather be in than out!

Funny, glad everything's ok. One night this winter we let the dogs out, and I was calling Sadie, but she wasn't coming (not like her). So hubby put on shoes, went out in the snow, and found her on the other side of our split-rail-and-wire fence looking in and whining. She had squeezed herself out between a gap in the wire (must have seen a rabbit or something) but couldn't get back in. Silly dog.

 I can just see Tobey's panic, the way you describe!

One dog we had growing up would occassionally dig out and then take off - sometimes as far as 5 miles away! The next dog we had would dig in the same spot, but instead, he would without exception dig out merely to wait for us on the front porch.

My dad poured concrete in that location at some point.

I'm glad you noticed Tobey when you did and everything turned out fine. :D

Your experience made me think of one of my own when I had 2 shepherds. We had just been living in our house for a few months. It has a nice fenced yard for the dogs. The 2 shepherds were out back in the yard. I happened to glance out my front facing bedroom window and saw 2 beautiful GSD's walking across the road, sniffing around the neighbors yards. I really did think they were gorgeous dogs, thought it was odd they were roaming free in the neighborhood, wondered who else in the neighborhood had 2 shepherds, thought wow, that one really looks like my Hughie and soon as that thought entered my mind I was racing down the stairs and out the front door in a flash calling their names!! ha ha!

They're MY beautiful shepherds!! :D

We (husband  ) weren't quite used to this new gate that didn't latch properly. But my heart certainly stopped when I realized it was my own dogs. Just had to laugh remembering that but very relieved, as you must be, that everything turned out okay.

Ahem, if you're lazy (like me), and don't mind the general ugliness, concrete blocks (when secured by a little bit of rebar) are difficult for the average BC to move (it's that lack of opposable thumbs thing that gets them). I've got the base of the fence covered up with landscaping, so you can only see a bit of block peeking out here and there.

My back fence is basically ringed with concrete blocks.

Glad you got Tobey back. He sounds like my dogs---they don't want to escape, they NEED to find out WHAT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT FENCE??

I was once sitting at my desk studying, when I happened to look up and noticed something outside behind the screen door. Thinking it may have been a parcel or something that the postie had dropped off I got up and walked to the front door. The 'parcel' was Bonnie! She was fast asleep so I think she had been there awhile and I'm just so grateful that when she got out of the backyard she decided that a snooze on the front porch was more fun than a wander across the road or a stroll down the highway. She had gotten out of the yard because my housemate's parents who were visiting couldn't figure out how to close our gate  My housemate was very apologetic and as no harm was done I wasn't too angry. I now have put a little 'please close and latch the gate' sign on the gate.
