Lizmo Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 What size plastic crate is a good size for a regular sized Border Collie? I had a 32" one, but he didn't fit. I then got a soft sided crate that was one size bigger, and he only uses half of it (but it's no longer an option since said dog decided it would be fun to chew a hole through it ). Now I'm wondering if a 32" would be fine? Also, has anyone found a way to reduce crate rattle with a wire crate? Would a cage cover help? Quote
Shetlander Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I think the size of the crate depends not only on the individual dog's size but also his sleeping habits. At a scrawny three months old, Quinn was making full use of a large metal crate, at least one size up what the manufacturer recommended for a Border Collie. I took out the divider when it was clear he liked to really kick back and stretch out. At the least, the crate should be large enough for the dog to stand, turn around in and lie down comfortably. From there, it varies. As far as rattle of the wire cage, I've never tried a cover. Having something soft for bedding (if the pup/dog won't eat it) helps keep sound down a little. Quote
PSmitty Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Also, has anyone found a way to reduce crate rattle with a wire crate? Would a cage cover help? You mean in a car? Or in general? If you mean in the car, I have bungee cords on mine to 1) keep them in place and 2) cut down on the rattling. Quote
Lenajo Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Yes, the car. sure, get a plastic vari kennel Quote
juliepoudrier Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Most of my dogs fit very nicely in a 32" crate (the equivalent of the Intermediate Vari-kennel). I do have some large Vari-kennels (36") that I prefer for the bigger dogs, especially if they have to stay in them for any length of time. So, for example, in my van I have six intermediate (32") crates and all of the dogs that travel in them weigh 37 pounds or less and can easily stand up and turn around (most of my dogs are fairly small, comparatively speaking). None of them are dogs who really stretch out to sleep, but they can mostly lay out flat on their sides, but not with legs fully extended. I have one 36" crate for Pip, who at the mid-40s weight range just seems more comfortable in the larger crate. He can (and has) travel in a 32" crate without being horribly cramped, but I wouldn't want him to have to spend all day in one. J. Quote
MaggieDog Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 My pups ride in 30" crates and sleep in 36" crates. Ziva would be fine in a 28" crate, but I already had the 30s and 36s so she does the same as the two bigger dogs, who are both about 20" and 32-34lbs. Quote
Lizmo Posted July 10, 2009 Author Report Posted July 10, 2009 Thanks for the suggestions! I might try a 32" again. They have a crate cover at Wal-Mart thats pretty cheap, so I might try that before I buy a new crate since the crate he has now is fine except for the rattling. Quote
MaggieDog Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 My dad used small pieces of adhesive velcro or similar thing (moleskin? maybe) on the points where rattling occurs and swears that it makes the crate completely quiet. Might be worth looking into. Quote
Lizmo Posted July 10, 2009 Author Report Posted July 10, 2009 I'll look into that if the cover doesn't work. Thanks Quote
