Liz P
Is there an active community of people training BCs to work sheep and trial in southern IL? Who do people go to for lessons in that region? Are there any good trials? How are the soil and climate for growing hay and raising sheep?

bcnewe2
I used to have a friend who lived in western (a bit south) IL close to St. Louis. I was helping her put fencing up. When we got there all she had was a hand held post hole digger. I laughed, she smiled and said...try it. So I did. OMG....the soil was wonderful! I quickly told her that this dirt was wonderful and she corrected me quickly with it's dirt in MO but soil in IL. Boy was she right!
Liz P
I am still waiting to hear back from both hospitals in IL and being patient is not one of my strong points. One is in southern IL, one in central. Who knows, maybe I will end up even farther away, like in WA. I am not a person who just sits around and waits so I have been searching other areas I would like to live for a job.
Laurae
Did you decide against Colorado then?
Liz P
Did you decide against Colorado then? CO is flooded with vets. They don't get paid much and the job market is beyond tight. I would love to live there if I could!
aljones
Just fyi, I grew up on a farm in central IL (near I-70, which, for natives, is the southern border of the "central" part of the state). My folks are still there, and I'd be happy to answer any questions about the area if you end up considering an offer that direction. We ran sheep (my 4-H/FFA project), goats (my brother's 4-H project), and cattle and raised a variety of field crops (corn, beans, sunflowers, wheat, etc.) and hay (timothy, clover, alfalfa). Hi Liz: My husband and I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and are also looking to move to the same area. There are a couple of people I have found that do train in Southern IL, but I have no idea how good they are, or what kind of reputation they have. Let me know, and I can send you the names. Also, LOLBCA is a good start, but I have emailed them for info before and they never replied, unfortunately. Maybe you will have better luck! Also, check the USBCHA website for the officers in those areas: I've emailed my regional officer for names and received a lot of great help.
