My Dog's Platonic Gay Love Affairs...

Recommended Posts

A woman down the street has two dogs: Malachi, an rescue greyhound, and Charlie, a rescue lab. We've met them several times walking on the streets, and both dogs are fairly standoffish, so we were able to walk with them and not have snarking from my reactive boy, Buddy. They're nice dogs, though they don't strike me as anything special.

At some point, Buddy has (once again) fallen in love, with Malachi. This happens once every 100 dogs or so, and always with male dogs. Buddy wants so badly to sniff Malachi's business (what's left of it) - but is so willing to let Malachi be alpha - that he literally puts his head under Mal's tail, between his legs, so he can get a full-on sniff from behind, without being alongside Mal. The other day, they were standing on the street, and Buddy had his happy-alert posture on. Malachi turned to look at him, and Buddy immediately averted his gaze, not wanting to be seen making eye contact with "the man," but clearly so giddy he could hardly stand that Malachi was making eye contact with him. Honest to goodness, his entire body language was that of a teenage girl, being spoken to for the first time by her main crush, the most popular boy in school.

Today, we ran into Charlie and Mal in the woods, and Buddy could finally talk off-leash. Buddy's primary reactivity trigger is any dog putting a head over his back: he sees it as an attempt to hump and almost always as an oncoming attack. Even with his good friends, he's touchy about that posture. But today, after Buddy and Malachi sniffed each other, Buddy stood alongside Malachi while Mal stood with his head in that most offensive posture. Buddy was, once again, clearly twittering with delight to be getting this much attention from the big man on campus.

I wish I could figure out what it is that Buddy loves about these particular loves of his. It's absolutely hilarious to watch him be so ridiculously worshipful. ::Sigh::

We call that posture humpy ears, in a loving way...

Raven hates almost all strange dogs, not really that fond of her own pack except her old pal Jazzy, they are 12 and 13, and have been together for over 11 years. They meet and greet each other in the bathroom every morning with kisses and some snout rubbing. But then it's back to her space bubble.

Raven has an extreme space bubble that no dog better cross.

Well like your Buddy, every 100 dog or so is allowed that special privlige of entering that space and actually having a good sniff. No rhyme or reason that I can see, it's not usually another bc but there are just a few dogs....

Doesn't matter girl or boy, it's just that choosen one. Used to be one in particular, a female aussie, and I was told that aussie had the same issues.

I never wonder why, just enjoy seeing her so happy.

btw...she doesn't do the humpy ears, just the play bow and tail lifting for the other dog to have a full access sniff, then wanting to run around like a puppy.

Go figure.

I dont know what it is about certain dogs..I know at the kennel I work at, we have a Malamute and a Husky that are both very dominant and cant get along with other dogs..but they LOVE eachother, everywhere they go they stick to eachother like glue, they play, they flirt and when they are together, nobody else exsits. now I have seen this in dogs that live together and are very close, but these 2 are the eqivilent of 2 strangers in the same hotel building lol.

or with Happy, she is reactive as well and while she is pretty much over it now, there have always been a select few dogs that she has never had a problem with.

Hey NW Montana BC

I don't think the title of this thread was accurate, Personally I felt that the OP was posting a question on why her dog liked some and not others and was being a bit cute with her title. BIG DEAL.....

You've been here so long you feel like judging....

Don't read what you don't want to. Simple as that.

I'll talk about what ever I feel like, if you don't like it....don't read it.

NW Montana BC,

Wow, I didn't know a person could decide what was in other people's minds based on what the DIDN'T write to a thread (do you really believe that others haven't responded to this thread because the subject line is offensive to YOU?). Is that some form of clairvoyance? Sure, you're welcome to your opinion, but this board is open to all folks who wish to discuss border collies. As Kristen said, if you don't like a subject line, you're free to skip right on over that thread. There's a moderator for this forum and if she decides a post(s) is offensive, she can remove it. It makes no sense to imply to Kristen that she has no right to respond to your comments when "you didn't ask for her opinion." I don't believe the OP asked for YOUR opinion either.

If you look on the bottom right area of each post, there's a button that allows you to report that post. If you have a problem with a post, use the report button to alert Eileen to the offensive post. She can take it from there.

If words like "gay" offend you, then you're probably going to be offended often while surfing the 'Net. In my opinion, homophobia is ugly in all its forms.

Well if no one else will say it I will, what in the h*ll is this board coming too?

NOt going to get into a peeing contest but if you didn't want any anwser why did you ask a question?

I was wondering what you felt was so offensive in the op.

The word twittering, delight or hump? Really if you ever saw the behavior that the op was posting about her words are very accurate. I sure don't think she meant anything other than an offensive posture, which I certainly took to mean the dog was standing over the neck of her dog, something dogs find offensive. Nothing pornographic. At least not in my mind.

Should I repeat myself again?

There you go asking another question again, I suppose you don't want an answer. But I'm not a mind reader or anything, just a good guess.

Gay....guess she could have left that word out but I wasn't offended her her choice of verbage, and I don't think homosexuals would be either. Could be wrong, I'll ask my "gay" friends the next time I see or talk to them.

I jumped in because I thought you were carelessly throwing insults out where none needed to be tossed. It really was an innocent post, unless your mind took it somewhere else.

If you find that post to offensive for you children, perhaps you better not let them read this board as it's gets way worse than that, and usually it is not meant to be offensive.

No more from me. To stupid of an argument to partisipate in.

Hey, all,

Could we just let this one die? I'm feeling like some good people might get their feelings hurt if this goes off in a direction I didn't intend.

I'm OK with my original intent, and I'm old enough to take it if someone strongly objects to what she thinks I meant. The debate isn't worth risking bad mojo for our friends out there in Internet land.

OK. I was not responding because I had nothing to add. I thought it was an interesting post. But I own a spayed female who loves every dog she meets. Of course, she especially loves neutered males who defer to her.

I guess I had best add at least a token response to every interesting post. Usually, I read most everything and post only when I have something that I, at least, think is worth posting.

If the title of a post offends me - or if it looks like I'll end up crying and feeling unable to help - I don't read the post or the thread.

If any hint of anything now called "gay" bothers you, that is your problem. It is not the problem of the rest of us on the board. I am as straight and monogamous as is possible - one heterosexual relationship from the time I was 19 until now, aged 62. It works for me. But I don't insist it is what is right for anyone else.

Gee whiz, I understand most religions now accept gays who are celibate. And these dogs are.

GET A GRIP, Montana.

NW_MONTANA_BC:

I'm tempted to remove your post, and all the ensuing posts that it led to, but I'm going to leave them because they are such a good illustration of why I ask that people do not tell other posters what they can and cannot post. It's inappropriate, it's off-topic, and it leads to nothing but acrimony. You may disagree with the substance of someone's post, but it is up to them, not to you, to determine what they post. If you think their post is objectionable, please utilize the "Report!" button to notify the moderator, who will take action if she determines that the post should be removed.

As moderator, I have reviewed the thread prior to your first post, and I find nothing in it that exceeds the bounds of civility or good taste on a board dealing with dogs and dog behavior. There ARE more and different things to talk about regarding BCs, and those things are being talked about in all the other threads. Naturally you will want to participate in the threads that interest you, and not in the ones that don't, but please consider how rude it is to try to squelch someone else's conversation because it is not one you want to participate in.

ETA: I removed the posts subsequent to this one, because NW_MONTANA_BC wrote me that he or she should have a right to reply if I let other people continue to post criticizing him/her, and I think that is probably a fair point, but I didn't want it prolonged any further.
