SoloRiver
Solo's counter surfing has increased as he's aged, but it's gotten much worse lately. He's been getting alprazolam (Xanax) twice a day because of the #($*&$!!! neighbors who feel the need to shoot off fireworks at random times of the evening during this time of year ("this time of year" meaning from mid-June to whenever they run out of fireworks, which may not be until August) and make his life a living hell. A well-known side effect of Xanax is increased appetite. Alprazolam increases food intake in humans.Haney M, Comer SD, Fischman MW, Foltin RW. Psychopharmacology (Berl). 1997 Aug;132(3):311-4 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9292632 Department of Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and New York State Psychiatric Institute, New York 10032, USA. mh235@columbia.edu The present study investigated the effect of alprazolam on the pattern of food intake in seven male participants living in a residential laboratory for 17 days. A wide selection of meals, snacks and beverages was freely available. Capsule administration occurred at 1300 and 1730 hours. Food intake on days when alprazolam (0.75 mg) was administered (days 2, 11) was compared to days when no capsule (days 1, 9) or placebo (days 3, 10) was administered. Alprazolam increased total caloric intake by approximately 975 kcal from a baseline of 2800 kcal. Alprazolam increased the number of eating occasions occurring in the evening (1700-2330 hour), without altering the size of eating occasions (kcal), or the proportion of total calories derived from carbohydrate, fat and protein. These data demonstrate alprazolam's robust effects on food intake in humans. OK, the sample size is tiny. But +975 kcal??? So, if your dog is also being pharmacologically assisted during fireworks season, watch the countertops. He may have the munchies. You have been warned. Liz P
I tried Xanax for Sage early this year hoping for a calmer and hungrier dog (he was upset by my loud neighbors, especially while I was not home). He still lost 10 lbs before I gave up and switched him to clonidine. We have moved and he is better, but he still gets his cocktail of drugs. I never realized just how bad the thunderstorms in the Midwest could be until I moved here with a noise phobic dog.
Rebecca, Irena Farm
Yup. My book on affective disorders said that Xanax is one of the worst offenders in that respect, among the anxiety meds. Good thing he's not on Wellbutrin. That triggers an entirely different craving.
