Root Beer
Yesterday I got home from work and my friend, who was supposed to be there, was outside with the dogs. As I walked up to the front door, my neighbor called over asking if all of my dogs were there. I asked my friend and she said that they were. He went on to tell me that Maddie had been found earlier that day running around the neighborhood loose and that one of the neighbors had put her in the dog yard. My friend told me then that when she got there, Maddie and Dean were out in the dog yard. I never ever leave my dogs out. They are in the house with the doors locked at all times when I'm not home. Well, it turns out that our side door didn't latch properly. Another neighbor came by later and told me that she was the one who found Maddie and when she brought her back, the side door was hanging open and Dean was beside the steps that lead up to the door "just sitting there". Knowing Dean, I understood the slightly freaked tone of voice she used when she said he was "just sitting there". She closed the door and put Maddie and Dean in the dog yard. Thankfully, Sammie and Speedy either didn't notice that the door was hanging open or they had the good sense to stay in the house. This could have ended badly. As it is, I had a very freaked out Dean Dog. He spent the whole evening having reverted to the way he used to be when he had separation anxiety. He was evidently quite disturbed by finding the door open and nobody home like that. Maddie had a feast in the cow pastures and was sick almost all night. In spite of spending most of the night cleaning carpets and doing wash, I am grateful that's all she got into. Now all is well. Maddie's stomach is back in order, Dean is back to normal, the house is cleaner than it was when I left yesterday, and until we can figure out how to fix the side door, it is bolted from the insdide and I'm going out the front door. Jack & Co.
Wow, I'm glad that story had a happy ending. Poor Dean Dog.
desertranger
I have to agree. I would have freaked out.

Jedismom
That must have been so scary for you. I'm so glad it turned out okay!
ShoresDog
Whew. Whew. Whew. That would have thrown me for a major loop, too, Dean Dog, so I sympathize. It's the kind of thing that can just happen. I've had a similar thing happen with a poorly latching screen door with my cats, for whom the backyard fence means nothing. I'm very glad it all turned out okay. Given that you're being a good sport about your newly cleaned carpets, anyhow!
Root Beer
I am very grateful that the neighbors got them into the dog yard. It would have been a lot worse to have come home to find the door wide open and Maddie missing. As it was, by the time I got there everyone was accounted for. Still, I don't even want to think about the things that could have happened. And, I am SO grateful that a thunderstorm didn't come up. I don't know what Dean would have done. He might have gone back into the house to hide, but who knows?
PSmitty
Yep, that would've scared the pants off me, too! Thank goodness they're all OK.
Ms.DaisyDuke
Well, I am glad everyone is back to normal now. That must have been one heck of an experience for Dean!
Cody & Duchess
Sounds like you have really great neighbors, lucky you.
MrRipley
That's really scary. Glad everything worked out. I often think about how I want to set up a webcam to keep an eye on my dogs while I'm at work. A friend had a dog jump through a glass window while they weren't home! And one time, when I had Sadie crated because we were having work done to the outside of the house (she is not usually crated during the day) she got her teeth stuck in the crate. Luckily she came through unscathed.
Freeman 101
Kristine, I'm so glad everyone is okay! I've been there. My lab opens doors and has let the other dogs out. I have to be very careful to keep the doors locked. She also opens gate and kennel latches with ease so we've always had to keep locks on these. sweet_ceana
Yeesh, so glad to hear that everyone is ok and that your neighbors were there to help. That would freak me out as well.
MaggieDog
Scary with a capital S! Glad everything worked out as well as it did - thank goodness for nice neighbors. Guess it's a good reminder for me to get to work polishing everyone's "do not cross the threshold until invited" training here!
