Jimmyd65
When we got Layla she was the last of the litter and weighed 5 1/2 pounds at 7 1/2 weeks. She's now 9 mos. old and 27 pounds. She's since been spayed and is perfectly healthy otherwise. The Vet we're using is a respectable V.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He commented to me last week that her bone structure growth usually finishes up around 8-9 months old. Only filling out after. Not sure if I buy that or not, but wanted some other opinions. Thanks

Thanks Sounds on the smaller size but not "especially"- sounds about where my Jet was at that age- now she's 33 lbs at 18 months.
bc friend
Not necessarily - my Sara weighed 25 lbs at a year and did not reach her full physical maturity (weight, chest filling out, musclature on flanks, etc.) until she was over 2. Some border collies mature slower than others. Meg also was slow maturing but Katie looked adult by 12 mos.
ThunderHill
My bitch Joss is 17 months. She was about 28 pounds at her one-year physical. When I took her to a herding clinic last month, everyone said she was a nice medium size for a bitch and she was right in the middle of the pack height-wise. (Female BCs tending to be smaller than males in general.) She weighs just about exactly 30 pounds now. She's fairly fine boned without being fragile, and has a medium rough coat which tends to conceal her slimness. She doesn't seem to be getting any taller (she had a late spurt at about 13 months) but is still broadening out, developing a wider stance and rib spring. I think she might wind up about 33-35 pounds. For a young Border Collie, she's easy to keep weight on and her rough fur tends to camouflage any weight she's packing -- I like my dogs slim so I have to watch that. juliepoudrier
Your Layla may have reached her adult height, but as others have said, she'll still fill out a bit until about the time she's 2. She may not get much heavier, but a 30-pound adult female border collie isn't considered tiny. I have one three-year-old fine-boned bitch who is somewhere between 28 and 30 pounds and a nearly three year old who is 32-33 pounds (and whose littermate brother is about 10 pounds heavier without an ounce of fat on him). Jimmyd65
Thanks everyone for your comments. Layla is filling out nicely. Her stance is getting a bit wider and her hind end is filling out also. 30-35 pounds sounds like a nice weight...
PSmitty
Layla looks a lot like a dog on my flyball team. Cute dog! Full grown, Breeze is around 32-33 lbs and is fine boned and petite. I imagine Layla will end up about the same. I actually have a male the same size! He's always hearing "SHE'S so pretty!"
DeltaBluez Tess
Rainey was about 5-6 lbs at 8 weeks and her littlermates were 6-8 lbs. Rainey is 25 or so now and fine boned. Her mom (Tess) is smaller and her sire (Scott is small)...the other pups now are 25 to 33 lbs and all fine boned. She is 17 months old now. Now when Tess was bred to Pleat, the pups were 4.5 lbs to 9 lb range. The 4.5 lb pup is 25 lbs and like Tess. Not a fine bone in that bunch!! I find some lines are smaller or more fine boned. Some are muscle dos and those pups are huge. It's like me and my brother. I am smaller and thin and he is taller and much more built. We really don't even look alike. But we have the same parents.
