jdarling
Has anyone ever bought a Frontline "KIT" like this? Click ----------> HERE What I am looking for is the opinion of people who have actually bought kits like these, used them, and can tell me what they did or didn't like about it. DISCLAIMER TO APPEASE THE ALARMISTS FOR PEOPLE NEW TO THE BOARDS: This drug is very potent and should only be used according to the instructions because you could overdose your dog and he could shrivel up and die or something. No one here recommends splitting doses and administering them like that. Especially eyeballing it like Jodi does. Don't do that. It's bad. Thanks. bcnewe2
I never bought a kit. I used the lg. dog stuff and a syringe to split the dosages. I'd put tape on the tube if I needed to save it. So is this "Kit" a bigger dose? Sounds like a good price to me. To bad Frontline quit working for us. But I've decided it's not going to be an issue in CO so I'm hoping it'll start working again. DH used to work for Merell, so I got tons of the stuff leftover. I've never had to pay for flea stuff before, this stuff's expensive! jdarling
Now looking at it ... I am wondering if it would just be cheaper for me to go with something like THIS and just continue splitting it up the way I have been (which is very very very bad for people to do so I would not recommend anyone ever ever doing that.) juliepoudrier
Jodi, I've never used a kit. Unless the savings is significant buying it already kitted, I think I'd go with the second choice and buy the largest size and split it among your dogs using a syringe you can get for 22 cents at the feed store. Like Kristen, if I had extra in a vial after dosing everyone, I'd just tape the hole I made (I used to suck it out with a needle through the foil) and put it back in the box for next time. J. Rebecca, Irena Farm
Sigh. Wish FL still worked for us. Life was so much easier. (As I gimp around to apply Sevin and brush out dusted dogs on a sprained/infected foot ).
juliepoudrier
Becca, I feel your pain (hey, that toe I damaged still isn't right, so I maybe *really* feel your pain). I haven't tried buying the largest size Advantix and splitting it because I guess I figured I wouldn't save $$ the way I did when I split Frontline. Maybe I need to look into that again.... J. SoloRiver
Syringes are way cheaper, but eyeballing it, which is what I do, is even cheaper than syringes. The dosage ranges are so huge that using a syringe to split doses makes no sense whatsoever to me. I just get the biggest size and split it three ways. Before I had Jett, I got the biggest size and split it two ways for Solo and Fly. Works fine either way -- PA, CA, and OR.
Kenbo
Jodi, Try this http://www.thepetonline.com/index.php?cPat...0d081f1e00bec7e or www.thepetonline.com They have a 6 pack 89 -132 LBS for $56.00 vs 16.99 for a one pack 0-22 LBS. I have ordered it and it was shipped in less than two weeks, but it comes from Australia. There was no tracking number to work with but there is an 800 number for questions. I was a little concerned at first, but it did come. Ken
bcnewe2
Frontline works in Colorado, Kristen! YEAH!!! I did spilt the advantic. The lg sz only said something like 55+and over. So I wasn't sure how to divey it up. I would do the eyeball method but with my eyes I was always afaid the last guy on the vial would be cheated. Plus it is easier to put on with the syriinge (-needle) that the stupid tubes, which I always seem to squirt all over myself. I'm worried about any of the products. In AR SOP was to use it up to 2x's per month per several vets I talked to. Only after they got done lectureing me that I shouldn't split the vials. Just put it on more....yeah, that's less dangerous for side-effects right?! I worry that our over usage might have been what caused Raven to start with the siezures. I've only dosed them once this spring, right before we left AR, the ticks were already out. Seen nothing here. I traded someone for some advantic so I'm gonig to stick with that till I run out and have to go back to FL. If you poke the foil part with the needle you have to do it in about the middle of the vial, or else the needle isn't long enough to reach the corner. Then you try tipping it upside down or sideways and dose yourself again
juliepoudrier
Syringes are way cheaper, but eyeballing it, which is what I do, is even cheaper than syringes. The dosage ranges are so huge that using a syringe to split doses makes no sense whatsoever to me. It's all a matter of perspective I guess. Since I'm trying to eke every little bit out and cover as many dogs as I can with the least amount of product, and because I'm anal and--as Kristen notes--I'd likely cheat the last dog on the vial, I just use a syringe. Since I raise sheep, I have to keep syringes around for other stuff, so what doesn't make sense for you works for me. J.
Debbie Meier
Funny little deal on syringes, coming from Kenosha/Racine Wisconsin you would not want to be caught with a needle and/or syringe, but here in Iowa, pretty normal to see someone climbing into the pickup with packages of them on the front seat or floor, even thrown up on the dash board. First time I saw it I just dropped my jaw....drug parifanalia... ah yes, rural life is a different one. Deb
Journey
And even cheaper here for the large doses that you can split (as long as you don't tell...) I just have a syringe that is marked for each dog. http://www.bullwrinkle.com/ShoppingPages/frontline.htm
jdarling
Since I raise sheep, I have to keep syringes around for other stuff, so what doesn't make sense for you works for me. Yup, works for me also. Funny you guys mention cheating the last dog. I always wonder if I'm doing that. But quite frankly, I never thought about sucking it into a syringe and actually measuring it that way. Call it lazy. I think I am going to buy enough product to get me through six months with my three (and maybe 4) dogs. Thanks!
Sue R
Whether it's Frontline Plus (easiest to do) or Advantix (what's working here now but harder to get into the syringes and get the last drops), I use syringes and dose the dogs with measured amounts from the largest vials I can get. Any leftover, I do not store in original container taped over but rather in the syringe with a cap on tight and all air I can expelled. Works for me - your mileage may vary... theshine
Never heard of the kits, but I also buy a large size and split it up...I always thought other dog owners would freak if I admitted to this, lol, but I'm cheap and with multiple dogs the costs start adding up fast. I eyeball it, never had any fleas or any adverse reactions.
bcnewe2
Any leftover, I do not store in original container taped over but rather in the syringe with a cap on tight and all air I can expelled. Done that, then couldn't figure out what the heck was in the syringe till after I tossed it. Duh....I need things marked or I'm totally lost. I just have a syringe that is marked for each dog. Now that's a good idea but after a month or so the markings get all smeared and I can't see what's on them. I had an old vet back in MO that would sell me huge syringes of expensive meds. That way I didn't have to buy a bottle and waste most of it. He put syg. tape on the syringe and would write on that. But again, they'd get oily from the med and I wouldn't be able to read what it was. So in the end I'd end up driving over and getting a fresh syringe of each med. I'd need. That way I was always checking with the vet about suggested dose. Less chance I'd screw things up. Don't ya just hate trying to eek out the last of that stupid little tube of advangate or advatic? Probably why I don't get fleas or ticks. I'm always getting it on myself.
Rebecca, Irena Farm
The little vials are cheap too. Homeschool supplies I have the little one ml syringes too - oodles of them because I have to use them for giving BoSE.
Soda-pop
I split doses as well. Big time money saver! Like Melanie, I split it 3 ways. I get a 6cc syringe w/needle and just suck it all out of the little packet, take the needle off (duh) and divide it up. I'm... neurotic about dosing even though I *know* it would take a massive amount to kill your dog. I just wish I could split it for cats but my guys are so damn huge (and fat) that they both use the largest size.
SoloRiver
Oh, I've got zillions of syringes lying around too, since Solo gets Adequan every week. I'm just lazy.
Ninso
Ressurecting this to say THANK YOU for this idea! Can't believe I never thought of it on my own but you guys saved me over $50 that I would have spent on Frontline. Now I can use that money instead to go towards the 50 frisbees I ordered for this disc season! BC Boards rock!!
Cody & Duchess
I am smacking my head with my hand. I never thought of buying the large size and splitting. Sounds brilliant. Does getting frontline need a vet's okay ( I order at the same time getting the interceptor stuff) - if so I image you have to key your vet into what you are doing??? Flea question - seems to be a really tough season here in FL - I am finding 1 or 2 fleas on the dogs even with Frontline on them plus vigilant flea combing. They are scratching and driving us crazy. I check a lot. All I have to do is tell the dogs - show me your belly - and they roll over with both paws in the air. Is scratching with seeing 1 or two fleas mean that there are a lot more there and it is a much bigger issue? Or am I overworrying. We leave for the cool mountains in 2 weeks. Duchess (5 now) has become allergic to FL - when it gets hot here something bites her and leave welts. We have tried everything - the mountains of New Mexico are the best solution. bcnewe2
I would bet that front line is not working for you anymore. I was in AR where it did nothing but I hear that it works in CO. Haven't seen a flea since getting here so don't know for sure. I don't think frontline is prespription so I don't think your vet has to do anything. We leave for the cool mountains in 2 weeks. Remember that fleas spend most of their time off the dog, so if you're seeing a couple, there's probably more lurking in the carpet, their bedding, etc. If you're seeing just a few then you probably don't have a really heavy infestation, but for sure there's more than one or two floating around. You may want to consider switching to Advantage/Advantix and see if that helps. You can also try the oral meds (Capstar, Comfortis?) to kill the fleas that are already on them and biting. J. Dal & Mad's Mom
I'm going to use this kit way but, I wouldn't buy the kit. I found advantix very difficult to save or pull out of in a syringe for some reason But, a bottle that I dump a few and then pull what I need is a good idea. Spill proof and dry up proof saving. Sheryl who also wont tell you that I use goat and horse products to care for my dogs.
