Question about toys.

Recommended Posts

Most of ours are homemade. We have fabric tug toys, and stuffed toys, etc., and they're made by me, or my mother.

Depending on how your dog is with toys (I know, I have a GSD who is a "KILL THAT STUFFIE!" type of gal), you could make some of your own.

Whole Dog Journal had a review of toys not too long ago - and mentioned the China factor. Even beyond that, there is some vinyl that eventually degrades, so even if the dog isn't mauling the toy, little pieces may be chewed off and ingested. Ugh. My fav is the holey-roller - good vinyl (if there is such a thing....) and the racquet ball inside drives my boy nuts! Kongs are good too - though obviously best if stuffed.

Kongs are great and they make a wide variety of products, not just the stuffable rubber ones. They have tennis toys with squeakers, tug toys, wubbas, retrieval Kongs (on a rope for throwing) and the flyer (disc). Most of their products are really durable too. My guys are really hard on toys but most Kongs hold up really well.

Bess is working overtime chewing off the pink camoflage fabric on her wubbs kaong toy... but it is tougher than about any other I've managed to find. She just chewed through another leash while we were sitting watching TV. I dried her off some after being out in the rain awhile and was cuddling her a bit in the sleeping bag with me for the body warmth, and the little sneak was chewing on her leash the whole time and it wasn't tight or anything! I have a feeling it'll end up being one of those nasty chain leashes pretty soon if she doesn't cut it out soon.

I'll check on it this morning but I think kongs are made in China. I just bought Tommy a couple of the stuffed kong toys and got home and saw they came from China.

I stopped one day and looked at all the toys in Walmart and I think everyone of them was made in China.

Have you tried Lupine leashes. They have a great guarantee, even if your dog chews through the leash they will replace it. We are haveing our second leash replaced right now!

Hey, I just made my first post! See how much I like these leashes, they even brought me out of lurkerdom :

I don't know, I'm pretty sure that brand name KONG's (not the cheap copies) are made in the US. I tried looking it up on their website but I haven't found where they're manufactured, just a recall assurance after the peanut butter scare (since some of their products contain peanut butter). This is what the site had to say about that:

"

January 20, 2009

Dear KONG Customer,

No KONG pet treat is involved in the recent recall of peanut butter. We do not receive any ingredients from the company involved.

Since we ship worldwide, KONG pet treats are subject to strict regulations regarding the presence of Salmonella. All KONG consumables meet with recommended heat treatments (cook times and temperatures) and each batch is tested by certified third party laboratories for Salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae. No KONG consumable has ever tested positive for either pathogen, nor has any KONG consumable been subject to recall. All KONG pet treat manufactures are inspected and certified by USDA / APHIS.

The KONG Company sells two peanut butter flavored dog treats. The peanut butter flavor in KONG Stuff’N Peanut Butter Flavored Treat (paste) contains no peanut butter. The peanut butter ingredient used in KONG Peanut Butter Snacks comes from North Hampton Peanut Company. The North Hampton Peanut Company is in no way involved in the recall.

Additional information is available at www.nationalpeanutboard.org http://www.nationalpeanutboard.org/ and http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html

Sincerely,

Chuck Costello

Product Manager"

I think I still have some KONG literature hanging around somewhere, I'm going to see if I can find it and if it says where they're made. I could swear it's in the US, in fact I seem to remember even taking one of their survey's one time and one of the questions was if you'd be more likely to buy KONG products because of them being made in North America.

Here's another toy that's US made and supposed to be very tough. I just remembered a friend telling me about them

I agree, Lupine is awesome. We've never replaced leashes, but several collars, and it was so easy, no questions or paper work. Plus they have great designs.

I recently bought a Kong frisbee, and it was made in the U.S.

I used to buy stuffed animals at the thrift store for the 3 stooges to shred, but they're not selling toys anymore, due to toxin scare. I guess I'll have to make my own.

I've been very careful about the toys I give my dogs since Seth almost died from injesting part of a rubber dumb bell toy. It cost me $2000 and he was in the hosp for 9 days. I now give my dogs only the best, safest toys I can find and that is all I will carry in my store now also. GoughNuts are very good. I bought some to sell in my store and I tested them on my dogs. So far so good. Even my cat plays with them! Plus they do have an excellent guarantee and will be replaced for the cost of shipping. Lupine collars and leads are also great and have a great guarantee...also why I carry them. I have found a source for stuffless stuffed animals also http://www.muttpuppet.com/ I'm going to check these out.

I bought Buster a squirrel that was AKC approved or some such nonsense, but it seems to be holding up. It has foiled him in his mission that the squeaker must be removed in the first 60 seconds of ownership and then the toy is useless. We have had it a couple months. When he failed to remove the squeaker he plucked out the labels, so I can' t check where it was made.

The AKC series of stuffed animals is extremely well made. Well, my dog takes really good care of his toys anyway, but other than the squeekers sometimes dying, his AKC menagerie is alive and kickin'. However, I just checked a chipmunk left in the middle of the livingroom and it is made in China. Haven't had any problems with any of his toys.

Orbee Tuff balls are fun, but don't fit in a Chuckit. This didn't deter me from getting a new pink "Woof." ball last week when I found it on sale at Target for $2 (instead of $12).

I looked for the KONG literature I thought I had but couldn't find it. We do have a few packages of their edible treats that all say they're made in the USA. I don't normally buy the treats for stuffing but my daughter won a prize pack from KONG for one of their kids contests that included them. I got really curious though about whether KONG toys are manufactured in the US or China and tried to search online. I came across a couple of articles about them going solar at their manufacturing plant in Golden, CO http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/pa...g-company-51361
