Maralynn
I take them along if I can't leave them with my folks or brothers.
JBlaylock
Take them if I can, have my mother-in-law watch them otherwise. She lives in a trailer, and we live in a house much closer to where she works, so she never minds staying at our place for us. More comfortable, and shorter commute. sandra s.
I wouldn't dream of going without them. And anyone who suggested otherwise would be dropped out of my holiday plans (with a satisfying plop).
Ms.DaisyDuke
She comes with us, no matter what. Our next vehicle will be large enough to hold 2 dogs and 2 people and luggage. Now, when we go to Vegas to get married, that will be another story. We'll probably look for dog friendly hotels and take her anyway. Neither of us can really go more than a day without the dog. in2adventure
They ALWAYS go with me. There are minimal places I want to go that don't allow my four foot buddies. I went on an overnight rock climbing trip once and Lucia stayed with a neighbor for one night and recently I had to go away for a school for 10 days. I could have brought both pups along, but my friend's house is really too small and I was in class ALL day. How fun would that be? So I left them with my folks. Other than that, They travel with me everywhere.
Root Beer
We take them if possible. If we can't, I have a very close trusted friend who spends so much time at my house that my dogs thinks that she lives there! She stays with them if we can't take them, or if we can't take all of them.
Tommy Coyote
See, you need to hire me. That is what I do for a living. I just go in and take care of them in their own home. Unless dogs suffer from severe separation anxiety or are destructive they do really well at home. We go three times a day for dogs, let them out to play or walk them for half an hour. The only thing is that they have to let us in or it doesn't work. They do really well. And we are really, really careful with them. Play with them and love on them. Never lost one yet. OurBoys
They go with us. On the 2 trips we took and flew, JJ's foster mom dog sat for us. I'm hoping all of our other trips are road trips from now on. The thought of leaving our 3 for even a week depresses me. (I suffer from separation anxiety more than they do.) Rave
haha my vacation time is used for agility competitions, so for all (< correct use of word btw) of my vacations, the dogs are with me. The few times when I have to fly somewhere, all (< again there) but Wick go to a friend's place who boards. Wick always comes with me. desertranger
We take them with us when possible. Stay at dog friendly places, the homes of unwilling relatives and the like. But tonight.... Stress, separation anxiety!! I'm going to my nieces house for Passover and I can't bring Jin because of her sisters dog, a Pit Bull, which has been summarily dismissed from any of our homes. Can you say, "Not trained well?" Ya says he can't come because Di will raise a stink. This is very true. So I get to go through separation anxiety since this is the first time we will be separated for up to *gasp* 2 and a half days. On the other hand. If Di doesn't spend the night, I canstealthly retrieve the Blue Djinnfor night two Which is what I would rather do. Otherwise, she who is our daughter and brought him into our home for the first time stays with him. Gao! non-sequiter
Lizmo
Depending on where we are going, they go with us. If they don't go, the pups go to the vet's for boarding and the two older dogs stay home with a doggie door and someone to check up on them. Laurelin
All of mine go to the papillons' breeder when we can't take them. I always miss them sooo much and this summer is going to be bad as I'll be out of the country for about a month total. (which is why I must wait on getting another dog until after then)
Cody & Duchess
Our spoiled dogs go with us - they love a road trip. Once when we went to Europe - flew my Dad in to babysit for the week. If we couldn't take them we would get someone to come in. The one and only time Duchess was kenneled - just 1 night. We had to go to a conference - took her and Jake with us - boarded them down the road from the event. Picked them up - less than 24 hrs there. Duchess ( BC/springer mix) was thrilled to see us. Was crazy happy until we got in the car. She normally sits on my lap riding shot gun (weighing 35#). As we started to drive away, it was like the dime dropped - she was safe, we were back, she was really mad. She went to the very back of the Pilot - looked out the window with her nose in the air for about 45 min. No calling, bribing , etc could make her come back up front. After 45 min all was forgiven. Needless to say - husband says he is not leaving her again ( so who has who wrapped around her little paw).
bcnewe2
See, you need to hire me. I'm in CO I need you bad! My daughters wedding is coming up. I can either drive home (2 days of driving) with the dogs and fly my DS and DH meet them there or be real nasty and make my DH (yes he's DD's real Dad and she'd be pissed) miss the wedding and stay home. I'm feeling guilty even thinking of doing that so guess I'll take a long road trip with the 4 of them and we'll stay at friends houses who are dog freindly. Thank doG that 2 of them willingly and wantingly sleep out in the car and it'll be warm enough for that, cause it's hard to find motel/hotels that'll take 4 without a hefty surcharge. I did slip all of them in on the way out here telling the motel staff there were only 2. They all look enough alike that noone knew but me! I felt guilty though. bcnewe2
Vacation??? What's that???? That's when you load up the car and go to a SDT that's farther than would take you to get to in a day! Right? Weddings are not vacations. I know that for sure! Heck it's not a vacation if the dogs aren't with me! But I do dream of sleeping in one day later than say....6am. That would be a vacation for me! Dew says that's not gonna happen!

Sometimes you just can't take the babies. I mostly take care of the same dogs over and over again. They are like my own dogs. They are really used to me. They do fine. And their owners don't have to worry about them while they are away. I would die before I let anything happen to those dogs. And cats. Debbie Meier
Well, the longest we are both gone is over night for a trial, maybe once a year, over feed horses, sheep, the dogs that are in runs and anything that holds water has water in it.... Otherwise either Wayne or I stay home while the other goes. We never have really vacationed, it's all about competition, when we were running the road with the horses we never had more then we could take with and the dogs (3 at the time) went with too. The rig is still here waiting for our next trip (if we ever take one), I guess it's big enough if we had to put all the dogs and horses in, it's a Mack single axle with an Allison Auto so I can drive too with a sleeper followed by a matching 45' coach style horse trailer (black with silver and red graphics), full living quarters (old fashion type compared to what's out there now) and if we put all the dividers back in it would be a nine horse, though we only have 5 to load up. I wonder how many dog boxes could be built into her..... Boy, did we turned heads when we pulled into the horse shows, what would happen pulling into a trial with that rig??? Probably get stuck Used to be really funny when we would pull into the ranch horse shows with it and only jump 2 horses off saddled and ready to go. I don't think the onlookers were expecting a couple of plain wrapper cow ponies to be walking down the ramp. Deb
Sasha's Mom
We have a fabulous petsitter who watches the crew. I can't get 5 dogs in either of our vehicles for any length of time, and I hate driving. We don't take many vacations... but someone has to look after the chickens now anyway. Pearse
I just leave mine a list of stuff I want done by the time I get back; mow the lawn, repaint the kitchen, install a hot tub. Keeps them busy and out of trouble and saves me having to do it. Pearse

Riley-dog
For vacations Riley goes, too! he has a neat trick where he sits in a little tiny duffle bag stock still, I throw a coat over his head and sling him over my shoulder and no one has any idea there's a dog around! I try not to make a habit of it but it has come in handy a couple times. I've just moved to St. Louis and unfortunately there are going to be a few business trips I will have to make. Anyone know a good pet sitter in the area? I checked out a Petco Hotel thing that was really pretty nice but I know he'll be beyond miserable there. My alternative is taking him with me and day boarding him in the Stilwell, OK or Tulsa, OK areas where I'll be working. One of my new neighbors might be able to take care of him in my home, too. hsnrs
We usually take the 2 house dogs with us if we have the RV. If not our wonderful neighbor comes over and feeds dogs; sheep; twice a day. Can't get along without our wonderful neighbors! We don't take 4 dogs often but when we do they are pretty good in the RV. We usually go to a trial if we take them all. Since we live in the boonies it is always a day or more. We are retired so every day is a vacation of sorts. Although DH works harder than when he had a real job. Carson Crazies
I rarely ever go anywhere that doesn't involve the dogs. On the rare occasion that I go somewhere that doesn't involve all five of the dogs, the non-border collies will go stay with my Mom. Recently I went to a trial where I left three of them at home with a relative staying there and when I got back June was in bad shape in my book. I won't do that again. I do farm sit for people I know well and I have to say it seems like a good farm-sitter would be hard to find. I *like* farm-sitting though.
