Rave
So I used to keep a list of potential future dog names when I ran across something I liked. After moving around a bunch, that list is long gone. I might be getting a pup in the near future, so am looking for ideas for a red smooth-coated pup. Only stipulations is it must be one syllable (maybe two?) and can't sound anything like my current dog names: Wick, Rave, Zoe, Sierra. Oh and nothing silly or fluffy, this is a working-bred dog, not a foo-foo fluffybutt. Also, I don't really like real person names like Ted or Sue. Is that enough rules? lol Not sure if pup will be male or female, so have at it!!!
mbc1963
Pip or Pippin. Tater. I LOVE that name. We get a lot of Irish-surname dogs around here: Brady, Murphy, Reilly, Duggan, Hurley, etc.. I'd say just wait till you meet the dog: the name will start coming out of your mouth before long. My dog's name (Buddy) was supposed to be temporary until I thought of something all smart and literary... but it only took a couple days to "take. " Oh, speaking of literary! Just finished listening to "Pride and Prejudice" on CD. How about Mr. Darcy for a boy and Miss Bennett for a girl! Mary
desertranger
Every dog has three names. The one they come with, one you give them and they're own. If you're lucky your puppy will tell you his name.
bc4ever
One of the stipulations was "one syllable." I had some great ideas too, but none of them qualified! LOL!
Rave
I might be flexible and go with two syllables. ;-) And as long as I take to make up my mind (don't ever go with me to a new restaurant with a big menu!), it's best for me to have some ideas first. I'm not a "wait til the pup comes" to think of a name gal.
Bo Peep
I'm thinking, also and it might be a year or so down the line. Will your pup be male or female?
NC_Y2K9
Oh, speaking of literary! Just finished listening to "Pride and Prejudice" on CD. How about Mr. Darcy for a boy and Miss Bennett for a girl! I have a Mr. Darcy! I think it fits the breed really well too...LOL. I usually omit the "Mr." but then the poor guy is always called a "she" and hears "Can I pet her?" "What a pretty girl!". He's prideful enough, though, that I think he can handle it. juliepoudrier
Here are some (mostly) color-related names that you don't hear much in the working dog world, but that might have been used ad nauseum in the sports world (I dunno). Flame Spark or Sparks (yes, it's a name that's already in use by someone well known in this area, but I think it's a great name for a red dog and could be a lovely tribute to the original Sparks) Rose, Rosie, (oops, they may be too much like Zoe) Roo (short for rouge = red) Ruby (always brings to mind, "Ruuuuuby, don't take your love to town") Paint (this is one I've seriously considered using, and may yet) Carmine Bracken (not at all color related--I just like the name) Ruddy, Rudy, Rudolph I you liked people names, you could come up with all sorts of famous redheads (Kate, for Katherine Hepburn; Lucy; Tom, for Thomas Jefferson; Molly, for Molly Ringwald, and so on....). Rave
I'm thinking, also and it might be a year or so down the line. Will your pup be male or female? Well I was planning for that same time frame, but then a possible last mating of a cross I'm really interested in getting a pup from just occurred with pups on the ground in May. This match has always thrown a red smooth, which I've always wanted, so if the temperment checks out OK, I'll take whichever is the red smooth, be it male or female. Thanks for the suggestions so far! I've always liked Roo, named my fave rescue that. That might be a possibility! Keep 'em coming! Oh and they dont have to be color-related. in2adventure
when I get another BC I want to name him/her Rip Curl. I love to surf and I think Rip would be a cool name for an agility dog
MaryNH
Our first red dog was named Blitz. My daughter's rescue (with a nod to Charles Dickens) is named Mrs. Fezziwig -- she is called "Fezz" or "Fezzie." I am looking forward to reading what you choose when you do get your pup. ~~ Mary and Travis the Trickless WonderDog
Rave
I usually go for unique not too common names, e.g. Wick and Rave. I'm not sure if I can be that creative enough again though. lol I've found a great resource, the ISDS database: http://www.bcdb.info/dognames.htm Wish I had more time to go through it all!! Rave
Has anyone heard of a dog named Kai or Cai? Apparently it's a Welsh name, usually for a boy, but sometimes for a girl now.
Bo Peep
If you look up Shepard in the Thesaurus you come up with this- might give you a few ideas. Main Entry: guide Part of Speech: verb Definition: To show the way to. Synonyms: conduct, direct, escort, lead, pilot, route, show, steer, usher I also looked up friend, helper, etc... It's a good place to get started.

I finally named my red dog Tay after the Firth of Tay in Scotland. But I always called her tater. She was a smooth coat and had a lot of freckles. Not a pretty dog but I sure loved her. Roofus
I think a good idea for how to name a dog is just to take the information he/she gives you. Its more personal that way... like our stray that showed up at our back door on a dark stormy night was named Stormy. It's better to match the name to the personality in my opinion. BustopherJones
My personal favorites (Scottish names, appropriate for a Border Collie): Ailsa Maisie Skye (As you can guess, DW is the one who named Annie.)
Rave
Thanks guys, keep em coming. :-) Like I've already said, I'm not waiting til I get the pup to name it for the people who keep suggesting that! A lot of these names I'm adding to my list of potential future pup names since I lost my last list. So thanks to those who offered actual name suggestions.
