Alex is spayed. Has been since she was 9 months. Elwood is neutered. Has been since he was 9 months. Alex has always humped the 2 retrievers and cats. It has always been a situation where she is showing dominance, in my opinion. Elwood tried to mount her earlier. She sat down. Jackie wondered if she was giving off some scent even though she is spayed. I think it goes back to the dominance issue, but I'm not sure and I'm not an expert. Would love to hear other's opinions/expertise.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but before she was spayed she went into heat. Elwood successfully mounted her even though he was neutered.

Some neutered males not only will mount but can even tie a bitch (that is cooperative), according to what I have read here. I don't think this behavior on his part is all that unusual, especially if he was not neutered very young.

A bitch that has been properly spayed should not be able to come into heat. She would have to have ovaries and be cycling to do that, and those should have been removed (or else you need to have a person-to-person chat with your vet).

Some dogs just hump. I have a 10-y.o. neutered male who for some reason likes to hump at (as in he stands near her and does the humping) my 12 y.o. Both have been neutered since 18 months or before. Humping is not always sexual behavior.

I've never seen it with a bitch but Mick has been neutered since he was about 19 months old (he's 5) and started tying with Dew on her second heat and does it each heat cycle. He is very aware of non altered bitches and acts like he has his parts still there. I've even wondered if a dog could be proud cut but I sure don't feel anything in there and we've never had any puppies so I think it's all his his mind and hormones. He does not play the humpy game ever. He is a very dominant dog that owns all 3 of the bitches here. Only 1 in tact.

When i had the male neutered LGD's, he was always trying to hump his girls in front of them, I think it was a show of dominance to the white boys. It wasn't a game or playing behavior.

I've always wondered if this was safe for Dew or even him but I figure it's not that big a deal since no pups have come out of it. We call it safe sex. There was once a guy down here that thought Mick was all that, his bitch was nothing special, he was always asking if Mick was fixed (like he'd forget or something) I was tempted to let Mick tie with his bitch just to shut him up, but thought better of it.

Dew is on the schedule for spaying once I get settled in CO. I tried to do it before but she came in right before the appointment so no go there.

My daughters neutered dog is always playing the humpy game but not with girls, it's all a game for him. I think some dogs play "humpy" games more than others. For Mick it's not a game. Strangly enough he doesn't mind if Pach (DD's dog) does it to him, but will snark him if he tries to act that way to the girls.

If a bit of ovarian tissue was left behind during her spay, she can exude the same pheramones as though she were in heat - sometimes this happens if she was cycling into heat when she was spayed.

Urinary tract infections and stump pyometras (infections of the remains of the uterus after spay) smell just like estrus to a male dog. Unless your girl has a reason to smell "available" (recently playing with an estrus female for example) it wouldn't be a bad idea to have her checked out.
