nancy in AZ
I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is sick with worry. Her beloved dogs (an aussie and aussie mix) escaped her yard around noon today and still aren't home. She lives in a very rural area about 15 miles outside of town with wilderness all around. This is the first time they've escaped. I offered to haul out tomorrow and help search on horseback. They've been out driving around with a whistle and calling. She's contacted AC, placed posters up in the area, and contacted neighbors to keep an eye out. What other suggestions can you offer for locating escaped dogs? I feel just awful for her and want to do anything I can to help. I'm sure they'll turn up happy and tired and dirty, but in the mean time, it's so hard to just sit and wait. diane allen
Depending on how "rural" her particular "rural" is....most dogs don't want to just go into the wilderness and disappear. If they took off after an animal, they can generally find their way back to "civilization." One good thing would be to contact - as in, stop 'em anywhere you see 'em - anyone who regularly drives the road in that area - UPS or FedEx, mail delivery, milk delivery, school bus drivers, etc. At least if anyone sees the dog - either roaming OR in some Good Samaritan's yard - they can let the owner know. Notifying veterinarian's offices is also a good idea. How kind of you to search on horseback! Sometimes dogs will "come" if they see another dog too. Best of luck to you and your friends. diane

Jumpin Boots
We live on 5 wooded acres in a very rural area and have a local elk herd that crosses down through our and our neighbors land. That being said, two of our dogs, not the 'angel bc's' but the other two take off about once every 10 days. We tried fencing them in and they just continued sneaking out, so the fence came down and we have just given into the fact that they run off sometimes. When we can see that sparkle in their eye we take them out on leashes, but otherwise it doesn't seem like it's worth making their lives miserable and always keeping them leashed. The longest they've been gone is 1.5 days and always come back w/in 3 hours of each other, even though one is much younger and faster. Sharing this so you can give your friend some hope that they can find their way home. Best of luck
nancy in AZ
The dogs were sighted this morning at 5:00 a.m. standing in the middle of the main road into town 8 miles south of their home. I've been helping to put up posters and contact driver routes. Thanks for the great suggestions, and keep the good mojo coming. Poor Jen is destroyed over this. nancy in AZ
There was a brief time this morning when Jill could be counted among the missing as well. I have the roofers at my house today, so I left her with my neighbors, a couple of blocks away, along with Boo and Kit (who both spent the day there yesterday). I was just about to leave my office to put up posters about the lost dogs when my neighbor called to tell me Jill was missing, she must have jumped their fence. I drove home as fast as I could, and asked the roofers if they had seen her, warning them they were not to try to apprehend her if they do spot her, because she is terrified of strangers. Yesterday when I tried to go home for lunch she was so terrified of the noise and commotion that she tried to bolt when we got out of the car, so I didn't think the prospects for her sticking around if she did run home from the neighbor's were very good. I ran in the house and grabbed my whistle. No sooner had I gotten to the end of my driveway and blown the whistle, when she came running up to me. I didn't even see which direction she appeared from. Needless to say, she'll be coming with me wherever I go today.

Even if our acquaintance was brief, I still have a soft spot for her.

nancy in AZ
YEA!!!!! Board mojo has worked again!! Both dogs were found a little while ago and are now safely home with their jubilant owners. One of the mass Emails that was sent out this morning registered with a couple who were out for their evening stroll. They remembered their names, and that the dogs were very friendly, so when they called them the dogs came running over.
