to wash or not?

Recommended Posts

I have Jerry max here from the rescue to spend the day with me. He was caught as a ferral puppy when he was 4 weeks and at 1 year he is finally very comfortable at the rescue with us. He is nervous but, ok and he really needs a bath. Should I bring him home again tomorrow and bathe him? I dont want to puh him too much as it's a rare outing for him. I'm trying to work up to public places with him. Hoping he will be adopted.

I would bathe him. If you are showing him to people, de-stink-defying would make him much more appealing to strangers.

No hes not being shown. he s here to be used to a different home than the one he's known. If he was being considered for an adoption he would have been thrown in the rescues tub. He cant get adopted,

Hes the kind that totally hides behind us or as far away from the adopter as possible. I mean which would you take the runnng up kissin you type or the cowering mess.

We still have 3 like that left form last years season so I'm working my way through them.

Right now if i make a wrong move(drop a fork or move too fast) he runs under my desk but, he will come back. I've been feeding him like crazy. I want him to wantto go with me days.

I am utterly baffled. 4 weeks of age is barely ears and eyes open - how is that feral? And how did it not have a bath for an entire year?

Enquiring minds wish to know

Well he then sat in a shelter till 8 weeks. When he arrived he wouldnt let us handle him. He growled barked puffed bit. He is only in the last month accepted attention. It's more likely his wiring and not enviroment. Only this week did he decide to walk up to me and begin washing me as I worked. He was always handled by mom and I and he always did what we needed but, suddenly he seems to want to join in with the humans

Edited to add: We always hoped that someone would be willing to give him a chance take him home. We knew he would be a great dog. We've tried fosters but, they wanted something easier to work with. Oh and yes he's had a bath but, not in a strange place.

I hope he finds a good home

I would hope he does too but for some reason a change of clothes while upstairs made him afraid of me. it would be odd (at least to me) that a change into non work clothes would cause concern. He is very comfortable at the rescue but, he may be a permanant fixture there.

I wouldn't worry about the change of clothes thing. My dog used to be surprised sometimes when I came into the yard from the front - he only expected me to come through the side door, and he acted like I was a complete stranger, someone to bark at. If the dog hasn't been in your home much, that change of context could very easily spook him.

Interesting dog story. I'm curious how it works out!

It's obvious that most of his behavior is his wiring. We treated him exactly the same as any other puppy we have ever had but, he wouldnt bond with us. of the 3 dogs left 1 was caught running at a dump and is a kelpie mix. She lives with us but, refuses to totally trust we are good and touch makes her squimish. The last girl Suzie was born under a house and barely saw people till she was 14 weeks. Her siblings were all adopted and did well. I often wonder if dogs can be autistic.

We once had a cat that we would swear was autistic. Even the vet refered to him a special needs. He just did not develop right mentally. If it wasn't for the other cat he wouldn't have been able to play. He had to be taught to bat things. He was also very very very sensative to noise. You would drop something and the poor thing would soil himself.
