I'm about to have another grandpuppy!

My daughter, her husband, and the girls (ages 12 and 6-1/2) are adopting a puppy from the Orange County (NC) shelter. They picked her out Saturday, and they'll pick her up next Saturday.

They've been told that she's "1-1/2 months old". She will be spayed and micro-chipped and will have her first shots.

But it sounds a bit young. I know that shelters do what they have to do. And Rosie ( they've already named her) and her sister just became available that morning. Who knows where the mother is. So leaving Rosie with her mother until a full 8 weeks is not possible.

What should they do that the mother would? They have a video from the shelter with lots of good advice. But, I seem to remember from the boards that there are some lessons that mom teaches the pups in those last few weeks.

I've loaned them our puppy crate and baby gate. They are definitely planning on crate training.

Congratulations. :D They're doing a good thing - pups that young don't last long in shelters. I very nearly lost my Faith to coccidia because she was in the shelter from age 8 -12 weeks. If coccidia doesn't get them, respiratory infection or parvo will.

Anyway, you've met Faith and know I am not one to consult on raising a sane dog from a young shelter puppy. But I'm awfully happy for y'all just the same. :D

Luckily, my daughter has a good friend who is a vet. The woman is the source of Mari's two rescue snakes. So she can find them a good vet - she's closer to me than to them. And can also give tons of help.

Hey, Fergie and I think Faith is lovely. We hope to see you at the next NC BC Picnic.
