JaderBug
It's the time of the month that I usually give Jade her heartworm medicine, and I'm wondering if I should do anything different this month because of the medicine she's been on for her mange problem. The heartworm medicine she's on is Interceptor, which isn't an ivermectin product (the box says "milbemycin oxime"). Since she's been on the ivermectin for her mange (and I know many heartworm medicines are ivermectin-based), is there any harm in giving her her regular medicine? Could it result in an overdose of this type of medicine? Do I need to give the Interceptor to her because she's been on the other now for a few weeks? I'm concerned about skipping a month and her not being covered because I don't want to spend $60 on a heartworm test that she probably wouldn't have needed otherwise... Suggestions? juliepoudrier
Rachel, Ivermectin and milbemycin oxime are in the same chemical class--they are both avermectins. Off the top of my head I'd say you don't need to give her the Interceptor if she's been on a regime of Ivermectin (and if I remember correctly, she was getting more than the 0.3 mL I give my dogs once monthly, so she would have gotten enough for HW prevention). The only thing you'll miss out by not giving the Interceptor is treatment for intestinal parasites, but I don't think missing that for one month would be an issue. But it never hurts to check with your vet. J.
