Shedding Question

Recommended Posts

I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I have a 10 mo female who has just begun shedding uncontrollably...... she has always shed but not like this. I have had dogs that shed before and this is nothing in comparison. Someone told me it had something to do with them shedding their softer "puppy coat".........is this true or is this the type of shedding I should get used to??

Is she spayed? If not, she might be coming into her heat cycle, and when they do this, their coats can sometimes blow out and look rangy and scraggly for awhile.

Actually Ive found the oppisite to be true when/before a female comes into heat, in that their coat comes into full bloom just before coming into heat. After a bitch has pups, she blows all her coat and becomes stringy and scraggly and thin. Most likly whats going on could be any nunber of things, blowing coat to put on a winter coat, a symptom of her health, diet, allergies. By 10 months she has already blown her puppy coat for the most part, around 5 to 6 months old, so I would doubt it would be blowing puppy coat. What are you feedin her? Has she been on any medications recently? Is she indoors or out doors? If she is loosing more coat than you feel is healthy, Id reccomend a trip to your vet.

she is spayed and up to date on all shots. She lives indoors but is outside regularly

I recently read a post on another forum that people have been having lots of problems with Nutro and the Zinc levels in the food. Might want to do some searching on Nutro food changes. That could very well be your problem!

That is so weird! When we would bathe a full kennel of GSD's the females in season or coming into season had handfuls of tufty hair sticking out around their neck/bloomers. I guess all breeds have different coat types, so that may be a key factor. I hope the OP can pinpoint what is going on.
