sbyrd
Thanks everyone for the welcome. For those that live in NC I live in Rocky Mount I met several of you at the Whistle for the Cure trial. I came to watch and learn and boy did I learn a lot!!. I have had Huck out to Robin's once and after her busy fall trial season over would like to try him again on sheep. Huck was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in August right now he is sound but not sure how much herding if any he will be able to do. I would like to eventually get some sheep on my place looking into upgrading the fencing right now. Looking forward to getting to know everyone on the boards. Sherrie Hey Sherrie, I don't know if I met you because I was up top setting sheep a good part of the day, but I just wanted to say that keeping Huck fit and active can go a long way toward keeping him sound. I have a retired open trial dog who has very.bad.hips. and yet the muscling she developed as a working dog kept her quite sound for years and even "saved the day" when she had a hip mechanically dislocated (that is, the good muscling from her working years helped hold the hip in place after the injury). She's now 12 and doesn't get nearly as much exercise as she once did, and she's gotten weaker in the rear as a result, but that has appeared only in the past 6 months or so and really only shows up when she's trying to jump up on things, like "her" couch. Also, keeping Huck fit and thin will help him stay sound, so stockwork might end up being just what the doctor ordered! J.

Rebecca, Irena Farm
Howdy again then! Yes I remember you for sure. I did a lot of blah-blah but you did get enough words in edgewise that I remember what you are going through with Huck. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you! Sherrie Hi, sorry to hear about Huck's hips. I have a BC mix who has severe hip dysplasia diagnosed at about 8 months of age. I was told to start saving for hip replacements. I am hoping we will not need the surgery. Currently, we do glucosamine chondrontoin and previcox (he was a little stiff a night getting up - much better now). And we have done some water treadmill therapy at the rehab vet to build his muscles up. He is almost four years old now and still running agility. I think the muscles developed from jumping have helped take pressure off the joints. In agility they land on the front paws first so it does not aggrevate the hips. And the ortho vet said it was okay for him to participate. It keeps his mind and body active. Anyway, my trainer said he would be able to participate in herding longer than agility. However, we have only been in the round pen once and there was only one moment of interest. The rest of the time he looked like a Maremma. I know the herding intincts are there, he just doesn't seem to connect them to the sheep. On the positive side, I have trained him out of herding cars and other dogs. Perhaps I should have taken him to sheep before I worked so hard on controlling some of those instincts. Welcome! Mel, Amber, and the Baxter. Bonnie playing in the tunnels at Rainbow Bridge. sbyrd
I haven't figured out how to enter the Quote to respond to each of you. I am a little computer illiterate if my teenager was home she would be able to figure it out. Oh Well. Julie I remember you running a couple of your dogs but we didn't get a chance to meet next time for sure. I think Huck would be able to handle the herding physically I'll just have to see how well his instincts kick in he isn't from herding lines he is a Barbie collie as they are called loved very much. I didn't realize the difference until I started lurking on the boards there will be another Border in the future however lesson learned and it will be from the working lines. I was very interested in agility hence Border Collie I did my research I wasn't particularly worried about handling the Borders needs in activity I am very active and have plenty of room to run. That being said I wish I had known then what I know now. I would have definately gone for the working lines for agility or any other dog sport especially after what I saw at the trial and the wonderful, calm, sweet dogs I met there, now along with agility I am very very interested in herding. I realize hip dysplasia can show up in any dog all the testing in the world doesn't produce a quarntee but I was just so blown away by all the dogs I saw at the trial. I do not regret getting Huck he is wonderful pup and so much a part of the family. Colton's Mom thanks for the welcome glad to see NC so well represented on the boards. Rebecca that blah blah blah was wonderful I appreciate the time you took to answer all my guestions I am sure some seemed silly but I learned so many terms drive crossdrive the different levels I appreciate your time and getting to meet you. I am sure we will meet again. Ted and Gus were such perfect gentlemen! Mel Sorry to here about your pup I am so glad that its been four years for you and you were still able to participate in agility. Hucks orthopedic surgeon didn't think agility would be good for him but gave us the go ahead for herding. He said we would have to consider a total hip probably around 5-6 years of age. Huck sometimes has problems jumping on the bed so not sure he even has it in him to jump a jump. He is on purina JM which my vet swears by so time will tell he seems completely sound now but ya should of seen him a month ago couldn't even put weight on left rear it was heartbreaking. His left hip is much worse than the right. Sherrie
