Need BC Herniated Disc help

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to this board and am so glad I found a forum with Border Collie experts on it.

My Son and DIL recently adopted a young male Border Collie from a local shelter. He is the sweetest thing and they dearly love him. I warned him not to let him play to long for to extended of time as BC's will play till they keel over. (My brother has a BC and he swears that dog would run off a high cliff to chase a ball)

To make a long story short, their BC hurt himself, he couldn't walk, took him to ER Vet, who said Herniated Disk.

Put him on Predisone. It has been a week and he is better.

My question is, how long does he need to be confined, how long is the recuperation period? A month? Longer.

I would love to hear anyone else's experience with BC Herniated Discs

Thank you much.

How was the dog was diagnosed? Unless it had an MRI or CT you can't say with certainty that it was a herniated disc. There are a lot of other things it could be.

I'm not sure how he was diagnosed. I know they took him to an emergency vet when he wasn't able to work.

The Vet told them it was a herniated disc, they did an x-ray I believe.

He is now much better but they are keep him on very, very limited activity. Leashed potty breaks and crated much of the time. No playing.

About a year ago, our vet diagnosed Scooter with an "inflamed disc," but assured me it wasn't herniated, which I posted questions about on the board. I was also told by someone here that they couldn't diagnose a disc problem with an x-ray and I'm sure, by the amount of the bill, that it was not an MRI. He was put on a "short course of steroids" (six weeks). He eventually got better, but not sure if it was time and rest, the steroids, or both. If he had that problem again, I'd ask for an MRI or CT this time, to be sure we were treating him for the right thing.
