Anything good to say about "new" Canidae?

I just finished with my bag of "old formula" Canidae and have hesitated opening the bag of "new" formula because of the negatives I've read here about dogs having adverse effects (loose stool, itchiness, etc.). I'd like to know if anyone has used the new formula and liked the results.

The two I have who eat Canidae will not have problems adapting to a new "flavor". They are dogs that are not particular about their kibble. Bute eats Eagle Pack Holistic, which is one kibble that he will eat reasonably well, and I'm considering just switching them all to that if the Canidae is not suitable.

I don't have a problem trying it. My dog food store is excellent about taking back open bags of food that just don't work out, for whatever reason. I'm just dragging my heels about trying this bag as it seems no one really likes the results, from what I have read here. Maybe I'm just not seeing feedback from those who have no problem with it.

So, if you've tried it and like it, and your dogs are doing well on it, please post. Thanks in advance!

Sue - Keegan has no problem with the new formula. He likes it and hasn't had any side effects which if I thought any dog would have...it would have been him. Tess has been throwing up bile a lot lately and I'm not sure if it is the dog food or not. We started feeding her more through out the day and the vomiting seems to have stopped. So it could be either empty stomach for her and/or a combination of the new formula. However, she too likes the taste and doesn't have a problem eating it. I guess only time will tell, but I may try to find a different food after we are through with this bag.

I'm just finishing a 44 lb. bag of it (it was my free bag), and have no real negatives to report. The dogs seemed to like it fine, and I didn't notice any adverse affects. I'm the one who doesn't like the look or smell of it--to me, it just looks and smells like cheapie dog food. That, and there were some changes in the formula I don't like--for example, they switched from brown rice to rice bran (which is just hulls and is filler as far as I'm concerned). So I am disappointed with the company, changing bag sizes and raising prices (like we wouldn't know??), so am switching. I have my Strongpoint Naturally Premium coming this week (supposedly the old Canidae formula), and will try that and see how it goes.

Hi,

I'm new here -- been reading much of the great information here for several weeks, but this is my first post. It might be helpful re Canidae. We have a 14.6 year-old male Border Collie who's been on Canidae for years. However, he's always been a very picky eater -- he eats like a cat. Since the new Canidae formula came out, we've been nervous to switch him to it, so we finally caved in to the recommendation of many friends and ordered a bag of Flint River Ranch Lamb Meal, Millet, and Rice formula.

To our great surprise, Travis LOVES it. He actually prefers it dry, eagerly gobbling it up. (He has never been thrilled to eat the Canidae dry.)

We are pleased with this formula, as it contains no corn, wheat, or chicken. I will give him chicken that I cook myself, but I'd rather not see chicken in a commercial dog food.

Apparently, the Whole Dog Journal endorses Flint River Ranch dog food, so if anyone is interested, the website to learn more about this food is http://www.aplus-flint-river-ranch.com.

I hope my post is appropriate and that I haven't broken any forum rules by posting the website of Flint River Ranch; if so, I apologize.

Rachel - Good to hear from you! How's the baby doing (and the momma)? Celt used to have that bile problem occasionally, always in the morning before breakfast. Food in the tummy seemd to be the problem-solver for him and he also seemed to grow out of it. Of course, Tess is not a pup anymore.

Welcome, Mary, and thanks for the input.

In my normal, totally indecisive manner, I am feeding all the Eagle Pack right now and trying to make a decision by Wednesday (when I can get to the dog store) about whether or not I will feed the Canidae. I have faith in the company, and have talked to the owner of the dog store (in whom I have a great deal of faith) who explained the reasons for the change and how the food is produced (at Diamond but by Canidae personnel in the Diamond facility, with Canidae's own ingredients, as explained to me by her, and to her by Canidae).

It might just be simpler over all to switch to Eagle Pack for all, rather than using two different foods. The pricing on the Eagle Pack Holistic was a bit higher than the old formula Canidae but, with the changes, it might be cost effective now.

Thanks to all for the input. I just have to make up my mind and that is always a hard thing for me to do. I'm always trying to second-guess myself and indecision and self-doubt are major players in my life.

I'm about to switch from the old to the new, but It looks like I won't have feedback for you in time. I tend to be skeptical about personal feedback on dogfood because so many other things can cause problems, but food usually gets the blame. I like what I've read about the changes, but I won't know how I really like them until I see how Zeb does on it.

We haven't had any negative things happen with the dogs on the new formula (like loose stool, etc) but like Anna, I'm very disapointed with change in ingredients and even the smell!

So we opened our first new bag of Dog Lover's Gold yesterday.

I'll know soon enough with Zeb, but out of curiosity, is it just the kibble that smells? Does it make the stools more smelly?

I think it's just the kibble that smells, to me, anyway. And it's not a bad smell, to me it just smells more like cheapie dog food (Purina or whatever) than the old Canidae. Made me suspicious.

I'm doing well Sue and so is Gwyn. Thanks for asking. She is very easy going but wasn't so for the first 2 1/2 months when she had terrible colic...cried all the time, not just the 4 hour periods you hear about most with colic.

As for the food...I'm glad you posted that link, Mary, as I may try a new food next time. It does smell cheap. I don't want the dogs gaining weight either, like Bill said, and they only eat 1 cup daily as it is...which if I cut back any further we would have additional problems with Tess. So after this bag, I'm trying something new.

Interesting you guys have had some weight gain on the new. My two older guys who don't move around much these days (one's 14 and the other's 10) seem to have dropped weight pretty rapidly on the new stuff. I've had to up their food, which makes it costlier, too,

June and Linc both lost weight on the new formula - as if they needed to! Yikes. It took most of the bag to realize it, but that's a pretty quick loss of condition. Early on I would have said the two of them were doing OK - but as I tried to give them a little more to combat the weight loss they both started having looser stools - this on only 1/4 cup more daily. I agree with the look/smell seeming "cheaper".

The way I look at it is that your dogs may do fine Sue - and it may be worth trying it, particularly if your store is good about taking it back. I figure that's the only way really to know.
