herdcentral
We had a visit to a station on business and a colleague of mine took a stack of photos, some from a small plane. I have selected a couple so you can see the terrain the dogs are working in. The station is 750,000 acres. These station folk breed their own dogs to suit the conditions they want them to work in and mix and match with kelpies, BCs and ACDS although the predominate type seemed to be ACDS. Not being a working dog expert I am not sure what characteristics they select for and how they decide on what to mix but these dogs sure have to be tough! I guess there are a lot of different jobs that require specific skills. It would have been interesting to have had a yarn with the stockies. Because of the sheer scale they truck their stock horses around the station to specific areas. It is the dry season currently so most of the young cattle and stockmen have gone so the dogs are currently not doing much working.
Peejy
Great shots! I love the huge cattle and sheep stations, I'd love to live and work on one, one day.
Sue R
Thank you for sharing these pictures. It is certainly very, very different from where we live here in West Virginia, USA. Dry is definitely the word for these conditions. The stock must cover a lot of ground to find sufficient feed. We handle around 30 cows and a bull, plus the calves each year, on about 100 acres of hayland and pasture. Quite different!
