Guest maya's mom
Just wondering if Maya's "eye goop" is an issue I should be concerned about, or if it sounds normal. Basically, for a while now (can't remember exactly how long, but definitley more in the month range, than the week range), Maya's eyes seem to produce a lot of what we call "eye boogies". Most times it is just brownish in color, and is usually crusty, which I can just pick out of the corner of her eyes. But also, she gets a lot of greenish, really gooey looking things in the corners of her eyes. It sometimes is a mix of greenish and brown, and is really wet and gooey, not crusty. She shows no signs (to my eye anyway) of having red/irritated eyes, nor is she bothered when I mess with them, or pick the goop out. Just wondering if this warrants a trip to the vet or not. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks so much!

This happens more frequently during the dry season because of all the dust. If something is in there you don't want it to permanently damage the eye ... so I would have it checked-out. tualizzy
Lizzy gets little goopies just like you described. I've always just washed her face off and not worried about it. ....she wants to EAT them!
RaisingRiver
River has always had eye goo - if it's greenish and more then normal it could mean an infection, etc. and you'll want to see a vet for that (happened once w/ River) but otherwise, I just wipe I out. Ah... the joys of doggies
Root Beer
Maddie had that daily until I switched her to half raw/half grain free kibble. Now I'm surprised on the rare occasions when she gets it. I guess in her case it was her food, but that wouldn't nessarily be the case for all dogs who get this. I chose not to see a vet about it since it was pretty normal for her. I guess it's a judgment call either way.
Bo Peep
Usually dogs have "eye goop" we used to call them "sleepies" but, if they are green, I would look for some kind of infection. At least that's what I did with my human kids and I was usually right- LOL.
Guest maya's mom
Thanks for the replies. I asked the vet, and I guess b/c I mentioned greenish in color, they think I should have her looked at. I will go ahead and do that just to be safe...........I just can't imagine though, that she would have gotten some sort of infection. Oh well.......I guess that's why I'm not a veterinarian! Appt is Saturday, so we won't have to wait long. Thanks all!
bcnewe2
The green would be calling my attention but at this time of year I wouldn't be suprised it's not allgeries. All my dogs are itchy, it would seem to me eye goop could be caused from the same. We don't get eye boggies on a reg. basis but as long as they weren't green I'd consider it normal wear and tear. Think how low a dog is when it's running around. Bound to get thingies in their eyes being so close to the ground and at eye level in the tall grass. It would be the body's own way of washing them out. K~
trailrider
Mine get allergy eyes this time of year. There are several eye drops, steroid types too, which make the dog more comfortable.
hsnrs
Our Aussie gets this too. Luckily our older dog cleans her eyes for her. We live in the desert so it is very windy and dry here. Good to hear not to worry about it. N
2 Devils
My ACD has allergy eyes. About 2-3 times a year the eye boogies turn green so off to teh vet for eye ointment. Dogs get a form of conjunctivitis just like what we get. A vet appt is warranted since there is some green to it. No green, I don't worry about it and just start giving some benadryl or when really bad we give her prescription stuff allergy meds.
Shadows Mom
Shadow has had "eye goopies" her entire life. They are usually brown like you described, but sometimes they are an orangy-brown "goopy string" that ends up on her 'cheek' I think this is just from her pawing at her face tho. My vet says its not normal, but not abnormal. Nothing to worry about unless they go green, yellow, or increases in volume and becomes white.
