somewhereinusa
Sooooooooo, Is there a list somewhere of what the shorthand means for the alphabetically challenged? I just came across another one, LGD I'm guessing large guard dog, but I'm usually wrong. I hate text messages, I usually can't read them. Urban Dictionary http://www.urbandictionary.com/ or just google the slang and it will come up in urban dictionary, wikipedia, or something similar. someone emailed us and signed off with LERK (slang meaning out of the office for a while) who knew? Rebecca, Irena Farm
You mean in reference to BCs? Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm not sure but can help you out with a few: Organizations ABCA: Largest registry for Border Collies, not AKC affiliated (the AKC represents only a small number of the country's Border Collies USBCHA: Also "Handler's Association" or HA - the org that runs the National finals for sheepdogs and cattle working dogs, and sanctions trials that want to offer classes where people can get points to qualify for these events. AKC: Well, you know. Also known as ACK here. Because, you know. If AKC doesn't make you go ACK, I recommend Don McCaig's excellent book The Dog Wars. Culture: LGD: Livestock Guardian Dog And I'm sure there are others that can be filled in.

somewhereinusa
Thanks for the reply all, I also wish restrooms just said men or women(in English) instead of using pictures that I sometimes also get wrong.

Dixie_Girl
Don't worry, you'll catch on. I take it you are a driver? DH(dear hubby) is still driving, I had to quit 2yrs ago due to injury. Just like you learned, double-nickle, bear, picture taker, bug station, lot lizard, 4-wheeler, chicken hauler, garbage hauler, portable parking lot, etc. etc., you'll be slinging the puter ones around like an old pro! Glad to have you aboard!

JaderBug
Me too me too!! I don't think 'alphabetically challenged' is right, more like 'acronymically challenged.' I'm always asking what an acronym on here means... so here's a question, what is ETA? I've tried and despite my best efforts, I can't for the life of me come up with what it means. PSmitty
Alisa, yes, that is correct in some instances. In internet speak, though, ETA=edited to add.
jamesqf
.. so here's a question, what is ETA? The problem is that acronynms depend on context. ETA is most commonly "Estimated Time of Arrival", but it could be "Euskadi Ta Askatasuna" ("Basque Homeland and Freedom") if you're discussing European politics. In the context of dogs, who knows? Electronic Training Aids, maybe? So much easier just to do English :-)
Laurae
ETA: Edited to add. Oh, I see this was already answered. I'm trying to do 20 things at once, before I leave for the finals, and trying to read and post on the boards should probably not be one of these things! juliepoudrier
All this shorthand actually had a logical beginning back in the days of Usenet and communicating on bulletin boards there. Shorthand was a way of saving bandwith and therefore costs. It's not so critical anymore, but lots of us got used to doing it, and so continue to do so--and then of course with the advent of text messaging, it once again made sense to keep things as short and sweet as possible so the acronyms and other shorthand are likely here to stay. The whole reason for the ETA thing is that if you've written a post and then realize that you want to add something to it, it's polite to let readers know you've altered the post after they may already have read it. It saves your readers from wondering if they've lost their minds.... J.
painted_ponies
Thanks for the reply all, I also wish restrooms just said men or women(in English) instead of using pictures that I sometimes also get wrong. Ha! There's a bar in one of the small fishing villages north of Myrtle Beach with pictures of male and female blue crabs to designate the men's and women's rooms. During tourist season, when there are folks about who don't know how to sex a blue crab, you're in for an interesting evening.

Hey, if you're ever traveling in a country where you don't know the language, and have to try to figure out (in increasing desperation) whether you're a Wanaume or a Wanawake, you will find yourself becoming a real proponent of those little pictures. somewhereinusa
If I ever travel to a foreign country, I will at least to read those words. When you are in my country, (to work, live, become citizen)I expect you to speak my language. Tourists excepted, but I would think they could work out something.
