Lizmo
Blaze has a slight problem. He went in his kennel last night perfectly fine. I got back from church last night and let him out. . . .he's limping again* ((*Here is the story. . .About 2 months ago he started this limping out of the blue. After about 4-6 days it went away, and we've been fine since.)) So I thought maybe it was just a little something and it would be better by the morning. No. He woke up fine, didnt limp and went outside fine. Then he starts limping again. Then it got worse. Fast. By noon, he wouldn't walk on the same leg that this happend to before. And the same toe as last time was getting swelled up fast. So I took him into the vets at 1:30 and they did Xrays to make sure he hadn't broken it. No broken toe. *sigh* They really don't have any idea whats wrong. It could have been that the first time this happend it was broken and since it wasn't set (didn't know it was broken) he has what the vet called Osteofight (or it might be Osteophite?). Like a bone spur. It's very minimal (I got to see the Xrays). And the swelling is not in the joints, it's just the fatty tissue. The vet said he's never had to remove an Osteofight before. Guess that a good thing? If any one has any information on Osteofight in dogs, I'd be very interested. Oh, and he has a slight fever. So, he's on pain killer and antibiotics. And lots of kennel rest. It's not genetic in any way, THANKGOD! Downside - this has happend twice now. And if it keeps happening I have no idea what they will mean for us herding. . .or even agility, disc dog, and flyball Also, if this happens again, they want to sedate him and "mess" with the hurt toe. *shudders* Could I have some prayers/good vibes for my little dude? He really needs them. Though, a positive thing, he did WONDERFUL! They said he did great during the Xray, and he let them mess with his leg. And basically stayed offleash the whole time. He was so sweet with the vet staff, too. He'd give a little wag of his tail here and there and was pretty positive through the whole visit
Lenajo
Blaze's pattern of lameness and age sounds like OCD of the shoulder (osteochondritis dissecans). Have they xrayed higher than the toe? Broken toes are a bear to heal btw - they just don't let them rest. It could be just the toe....maybe. No more Frisbee, retrieve, anything abrupt on his joints. If he were mine he'd go on a minimum of 2-4 weeks of crate rest - hand walking only. If he wasn't showing improment fairly quickly I'd want more xrays and checking done. Lizmo
Thanks Wendy. No, they did not xray higher than the toe and leg (not the shoulder). He is on crate rest for now. We'll see what happends.
PSmitty
I hope it's just the toe. Good thoughts headed his way!
MaggieDog
Any way you could get to an orthopedic specialist? Sounds like you need an experienced professional's insight.
Lizmo
Hmm. Read a little more about OCD. Seems that it could be that, but, I can move his leg fine and he doesn't mind. It's his one toe he doesn't want touched.

Reddii
It might also pay to see a really good animal chiro. I take my guys to one (vet qualified who also practices chiro (has his masters in it) and accupuncture) and he can pick up stuff no one else has a clue about. He's an old school bush vet who knows working dogs, but has kept learning and now swears by some forms of alternative therapy. If you can find a guy like him it might help point you in the right direction. Cheers. Tony
