Tarragon Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Hi! I'm new here, but I was wondering if a mix could be part of this community? I have a 2mo BC/Aussie. Trouble finding some good mix boards and this seems like a good community.. Just curious before I start putting pics and stuff up. Thanks Quote

I don't even have a bc, and no one's asked me to leave yet. All that's really expected is respect for the tenets of the read this first sticky and each other. Looking forward to seeing your pup! vanillalove Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Definitely post a picture. We love puppies! Quote
Tarragon Posted September 4, 2008 Author Report Posted September 4, 2008 Definitely post a picture. We love puppies! Ok! I will post them in the gallery, but I might as well post them here right now because I've already started this thread. A little back story.... The Humane Society team members found 3 puppies in a box.. abandoned in a baseball field. Sadly, the female puppy got hit by a car (the one dropping them off).. and only 2 survived. I've always loved BC's. I grew up with one named "Brandon", and he was the most sweet and intelligent dog I've ever met. My mother also owned a Bichon Frise.. but not as loving. Anyway, I got a call from the HS from my friend telling me that I needed to come down there fast. I drove in my car about 20 minutes to the HS and when I stepped out, I saw Oliver playing with my friend. I knew immediately that I was going to adopt him. 2 Other families wanted him as well, and nobody wanted to back down. They had to raffle off to see who got to take him home, and as you can see.. I won!!! Oliver is a 2 month old(today) BC and Australian Shepherd mix. I'm sure he will enjoy 'herding' the other puppies my roommates have around. the back yard his HUGE and we have several parks in the are with nothing but acres of grass to play on. He got his very first shots today and is microchipped Weighed in at 4.5lbs. *proud* Quote
tualizzy Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Oh he is very cute!!!!! Congratulations! Quote
PSmitty Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Awww, very cute! I look forward to watching him grow up. He's a tiny little thing! Welcome. (Oh, and I have a couple of mixes and have never felt unwelcome here. ) Quote
MrSnappy Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 That is a very cute puppy. I wonder though - how does the Humane Society know what his breed mix is if he was dumped in a field? Are they just guessing? This is my BC X Aussie, who is now 8.5 years old. Welcome! RDM Quote
vanillalove Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 EEE! So cute! Yeah, I was wondering that too RDM. I guess only time will tell what he's crossed with, and even then it won't be for sure! Quote
bc4ever Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Awwww....so cute. Looks like you have a winner there! BC/Aussie mix is a nice mix. I've heard that the Aussie in him will calm him down a bit. We were actually looking for exactly that breed when we got Scooter, pure bred BC. Whatever he is, he's adorable. And loved! You had to have a raffle to see who got him?! What a lucky puppy! And a lucky owner. Have fun with him! Quote
Laurae Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome! Here's my BC/aussie mix...though there might be other things in there, too. I'll never know (despite two conflicting and ultimately wildly inaccurate DNA tests) because I found her locked in a city park bathroom in Eugene, OR, when she was a pup. This is Sophie, now eight: Quote
MrSnappy Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 I've heard that the Aussie in him will calm him down a bit. That is completely untrue. Just FYI. RDM Quote
Ms.DaisyDuke Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome! He sure is a looker! AND love the name...Oliver....cute! Daisy is a mix too....but some days I think she's pure coyote! Looking forward to more pictures and good on ya for adopting! Quote
Pat W. Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome you have the best of both worlds I have an aussie and BC's you have both in one package! Quote
bc4ever Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 That is completely untrue. Just FYI. RDM Sorry. Again. I seem to be saying all the wrong things on this board recently. As I said, it was just something I'd heard. Quote
Tarragon Posted September 4, 2008 Author Report Posted September 4, 2008 Thanks for the welcome everyone! I had a breeder who's been breeding border collie's AND shepherds (we live in a farm town), and said she was 90% sure. He may have some other mixes in him, but doubtful she says. I'm still getting a DNA test done to be certain. Oliver is a name I always wanted to give my first puppy. The fact that he's black and white just enhances the "Oliver" factor We call him "Ollie" for short. Anyway, Potty training is commencing. He seems to get the general picture that if he goes to the door and looks at me, he needs to go. He still has accidents in the house (especially when I'm asleep). I usually confine him to my room at night. He doesn't like the crate idea and whines all the time. I will have to implement the "earthquake" or "loud noise" methods to break him of that.. then I can just crate him for the night and no more potty problems! He knows his name (or the tone of it anyway) and usually comes on command now. He still gets distracted along the way, but hey.. he's a puppy huh? We have other dogs in the house and he likes to play with them.. but only for a little bit and then he gets irritated and a little "woof" to let them know he's done. He LOVES the AC. Right now it's around 104 outside, so we've been keeping the "kids" indoors (minus potty breaks) for the most part. Trying to mix his wet food with his dry food, and all he does is separate the wet from the dry... I don't know HOW he does this, since I mix then both completely. He is tolerating the leash. I have a little nylon leash I use for him (he already wears a collar) and when he notices it in his face he will bite/nibble at it. If it isn't in front of his face, he usually fights for a second and then concedes the direction I am going.. however, he usually just FOLLOWS ME EVERYWHERE. lol. I don't have to call for him normally, because he is always right under my feet. He likes people to. I've been implementing the "treat" factor when new known people come in the house. If I don't give them a treat to give to him, he usually starts barking at them (yipp, yipp, yipp). He's hilariously cute, but I know he will be a good watchdog when he grows up. He likes chasing ball and will bite it for a few seconds, and then lose interest. For that, i think we will be a good frisbee dog. When he gets old enough, we will practice by the river so he can cool down faster during summer. I have to keep him mostly indoors however because the Parvo disease is big this summer. He doesn't appear to have the disease now, now I'll just wait until after his 3rd shots to take him to the park and stuff. Winter should be over by then and we can run around in the parks. ALL of this a only 2 months! Quote
JohnLloydJones Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 I'm still getting a DNA test done to be certain. From what I have seen of people who have done DNA tests, you might just be adding to the confusion. Quote
afrancis Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Sorry. Again. I seem to be saying all the wrong things on this board recently. As I said, it was just something I'd heard. BC4Ever, Don't apologize. As you say, it was something you heard.... Not to put words in RDM's mouth, but I think she was speaking from experience with Tweed, who has perhaps only experienced a moderating influence from the so-called "Mad Teeth" of Piper Ailsa Quote
Laurae Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Sophie has been alternately ID'd as a chihuahua, golden retriever, and a coonhound through the miracle of DNA testing. Quote
MrSnappy Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Not to put words in RDM's mouth, but I think she was speaking from experience with Tweed, who has perhaps only experienced a moderating influence from the so-called "Mad Teeth" of Piper RDM is speaking from the experience of rescuing and placing lots of BC X Aussies, and single breeds of each. Crossing a BC with an Aussie doesn't calm it down one bit. I'm not entirely sure what that even means. Tweed is a total spaz, btw. Piper uses her Mad Teeth on Noodles mostly though. What is it they say about Aussies? 3 years to grow a brain, 3 more to learn how to use it? If that's true, then being half border collie has retarded Tweed's learning curve. He's over 8 years old, and still figuring out how to use a brain. Assuming he has one at all. Applicants continually tell me that they want a BC X Lab because the Lab half will "calm down" the BC half. HAH. Tell that to any of the go-go labs at the local dog beaches! There is no magic formula for "calming down" a border collie except a solid routine, good leadership, and plenty of mental and physical exercise. I have never found border collies to particularly "hyper" though to be honest. YMMV RDM Quote
RuthBelle Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Oh, oh, what a cutie! My Ruth was a BC/Aussie cross. Quote
Tarragon Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 Look, Look!!! I just got a real good one of him today and a me and him shot! Perfecto! I'm just curious as to what the DNA stuff says. I still <3 him regardless Quote
Lizmo Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Welcome! What an adorable pup! I have a BC/Aussie mix. She's a rescue and is 4.5 years old. Quote
Tarragon Posted September 6, 2008 Author Report Posted September 6, 2008 Started crate training today. ugh.. It's a pill.. with a little encouragement and some tasty treats though, he can stay for up to an hour in the crate (with me in the room) and not whine.. and up to about half an hour crated by himself. I'd say that's good for the first day. Seems like he's been crated before.. I'm going to try an overnight crating when I get home from work tonight and see how he adapts. Wish me luck! Quote
hsnrs Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Cute puppy. We have Aussies and they are all different. Not necessarily a calm dog. Hope you can get into herding eventually. We are newbies and always love hearing opinions from the great folks here. Narita Quote
