I've had Grady about a week and a half now. He went to the vets on Monday and got a clean bill of health and has to go back on the 8th for a booster shot. In the mean time I noticed he has a funny smell. Not bad, just wierd dog smell. Tonight I noticed he has a some discharge and that's probably where the funny smell is coming from. He doesn't pee on things, doesn't seem in pain, doesn't pee more frequent than usual, etc. just the small bit of discharge and the smell.

Can I give him something, like cranberry juice, to help keep an infection at bay until he goes to the vet again?

You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. You don't want to alter what's going on, just so the vet can get an accurate read on his symptoms.

When you say discharge, do you mean from the tip of his penis? If so, are you sure it's not just some drops of urine? Maybe some one else can weigh in here, I've never had a male with a UTI, but if one of my girls had a discharge other than normal urine or anal gland juice, I'd have them at the vet in a shot. I for sure wouldn't wait till the 8th.

And, are you sure the odor isn't anal gland juice - that is some nasty smelling stuff, kind of like rotting fish, but more dog-gy smelling.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, hopefully some one with some experience with boys and UTIs will check in.

If you're noticing discharge and a funny smell, I'd take him back in and not wait for 2 weeks. You don't want something that might be easily addressed turning into something nasty -- especially as a holiday weekend approaches.

Of course, my motto is better safe than sorry.

I agree. Waiting is never good. I checked him again and things seem normal now. Could have been a bit of urine that looked funny. Maybe I jumped the gun a bit. New Mom syndrome? It was REALLY bad with Lucia....lol! The smell is musky and not fishy. I think I'm being paranoid because I've never had a boy. This should not be a big deal, but it's something new.

I'll keep an eye on him this weekend and if things are amiss, take him to the vet on Monday. He's really good about getting me in in a pinch because I live so far away.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you (and him) that it's nothing. As an aside, I've had 7 males and there wasn't any significant smell that I ever noticed.
