It has a specific meaning here, and dogs who "cross their course" are hit quite hard at trials, so I don't quite understand how UK trialing would create dogs more likely to cross. I seem to remember a discussion where in Australian trials, the dogs aren't allowed to cross between handler and sheep. Is this what you're talking about when you say "cross"? J.
