kristyp
Hello, Thought I might as well come out of lurkdom. My name is Kristy and we have a border collie. Whew, that was not so bad! Billy is 10.5 months old now and I have been reading the boards and gleaning info for the last 11 months or so. Technically, Billy is my daughter's dog. She has actually snuck a post on here a time or two.(shhh don't tell anyone, but I used her desire to get a dog to fulfill my desire for a BC!) We also have, Johnny, a husky-BC mix from the pound and Skuga, a cairn terrier. (Johnny is about 3 and Skuga is 5 now.) Johnny was somewhat instrumental in our getting a BC as well. He is fairly good at learning, but has a wild hare(literally!) He can be great, but has a real thing about bunnies and we have lots around here! He actually has a thing about anything that runs from him. He was doing great off lead until he discovered bunnies....now he is an onlead all the time dog! Oh well. I have been somewhat hesitant to post about Billy, as I worried that the minute I posted about his wonderfulness, he would start some horrible behavior. Touch wood, this will not happen. Of course, we have already dealt with the pool cover jumping(to the tune of a new pool cover!), recently water bowl digging(touch wood...seems to have gotten the message that this is a no-no), and as I just posted excitement with children running and playing. He is a gorgeous red and white fellow. Thin as a whip and fast as one too! Loves to fetch and will always offer a ball to you. We did teach him "game over" from puppy hood and he knows now that those words mean the end of fetch. He is an indoor outdoor lad. He loves the morning and can spend an hour amusing himself with balls and toys and bones while we eat breakfast. He comes inside and knows not to chase the cats!!( any ideas on how to teach Johnny that same thing?other than years of not being free in the house?) He sleeps in the room with his 'official' mom, my daughter and he has even learned to sleep in past her 5AM wake up for swim team! Yippee!! He loves to go on hikes and walks. So far has not learned to swim much....not sure I want to start that with the pool in the backyard.....we will see! All in all, I have to say, that so far he has been one of the easiest to train dogs we have had! ( Einstein, our golden retriever, was great but had a mind of his own)( Einstein also managed to destroy brand new vinyl floor in his youth, so we were somewhat prepared for the pool cover issue) Anyhow, thank you for all of your wonderful insights into the BC mind! This board has been a useful tool in raising Billy!! Sometime soon, I may figure out how to post pics and then will post some pics from his short life so far! vanillalove
Welcome to the boards! I'd have to say that a command like "game over" or "that'll do" is probably one of the most important things to teach a Border Collie from the beginning! Good job! WyoBC
Welcome to the boards. Your little guy sounds very nice. It sounds like you have done a good job so far with him. Mine loves rabbits too. He won't chase them but LOVES to herd them. After he found out that PetCo has rabbits he loves going in there. He always looks at me like "please dad, can I have one?" I have to laugh everytime. bc4ever
Welcome! Glad you quit lurking! LOL! You'll find the people here to be knowledgeable, empathetic, and genuinely interested in helping any way they can. They also have a great sense of humor!! I guess that's what gets us through the "what is this now?!" times! Besides, who can't look at a Border Collie without smiling?
