DTrain
I spoke with a friend some time ago who wanted to get a BC. I gave as much information as I could. He knows my dogs and I suggested he contact a breeder. Sometimes I should just stay out of it. He did contact a breeder and the breeder requested as part of the purchase agreement that the dog NOT be registered with AKC. My friend objected to this and wanted to know what I thought and wanted to know what the problem was, the AKC sounds important to him. I responded with an earful and explained to him why he should not register the dog with AKC and suggested he perhaps would be better suited to a poodle. I will send an email to the breeder and promise him I will never send another friend to him again. This guy wants to register his dog somewhere, it is important to him although the dog could not care less. Any ideas on where I should tell him to go. Thanks, I am just in the mood for this. I should choose my friends more carefully.
Sue R
So, if you don't think a Border Collie should be registered with AKC (and I feel the same way, as do many on these boards), why do you object to a breeder that doesn't want their pups registered with AKC? Or am I reading something wrong?
juliepoudrier
Sue, He's not objecting to the breeder; he's objecting to the friend/potential buyer who wants to register with AKC. The OP is presumably planning to apologize to the breeder for sending someone along who wants to register AKC when the breeder doesn't allow that. DTrain, Are the breeder's dogs unregistered? Registered with ABCA? I'm not sure what the real question is? Are you asking if there's more advice to give the friend? Does he understand that ABCA is the registry for border collies? If all he wants is any registration then I don't know what ABCA wouldn't work, but I must be missing something.... J.
Sue R
Thanks, Julie. I just was not sure which he was meaning and my first thought was that there was a contradiction there.
Rebecca, Irena Farm
If the dog is unregistered, then he can't be ACK registered either. If he's ABCA registered, then the conversation should have turned on the fact that, as Julie said already, the ABCA is the most influencial Border Collie registry, while the ACK hardly has any Border Collie registries at all in comparison. If he's not registered then the breeder might be objecting to ILP, but I'm not sure why a breeder would think they could prevent that - or waste a whole lot fo brain power doing it, on an unregistered pup that will be neutered. DTrain
Sorry guys I was just ranting. Yes the breeders dogs are registered with ABCA. I get so angry with friends and people sometimes who come to me for advise on getting a BC that from now on I am sending them to the SPCA or, I am saying nothing. This friend seemed to have his act together and he was well informed. Now I find out he has suddenly become a BC expert, he wants a dog he can show. I did not know this up front, so I am stupid enough to send him to a stockdog breeder, no more. I will give my best advise any day for the good of BC's but for general educational purposes only. I ran into a situation last night. I was out giving the dogs some play time. The person who lives across the road came over with a couple of friends. He started telling his friends all about how well trained my BC's are and that they are herding and goose dogs. He was making comments like, these dogs are so smart they train themselves. His friends jumped in with things like, I hear they will wreck your house and attack your kids. One friend mentioned he wants to get one as a pet, where can he get one. They caught me just in the right mood for a lecture. I am sure they left thinking I am an idiot but at least they left. I am sure you have all experienced the same thing but since moving from the country to a more urban setting I am getting it more and more and the mis-information about BC's is driving me crazy. I now run into people almost every day who want to talk about BC's and some of the stuff I hear is crazy. I just tell myself, calm down and do a good informed job of explaining, be nice, help the dogs. I need to become a spokesperson for BC's. Yes BC's make great pets, they are fantastic dogs and every BC in rescue should have a great home and informed owner. Of course I lean toward working dogs but my dogs are also pets if you will. There are so many great owners on this board, I am very impressed how our board members have made such an effort to understand their BC and all of the things that come with BC ownership, thanks. Is anyone aware of an information sight I can send people when they are looking for a BC. Sorry, it just sometimes gets to me.
Sue R
Sorry, it just sometimes gets to me. I think it gets to us all. When people ask me what kind of dog I have, I say "working Border Collie - we have cattle" and I usually avoid the "wow, I've got to get me one" response. In other situations, I just say "sheepdog" and leave it at that. I'd rather they were the dog world's best-kept secret, for the sake of the dogs if nothing else. grenzehund
Is anyone aware of an information sight I can send people when they are looking for a BC. Sorry, it just sometimes gets to me. Well, they can look at our "home" www.bordercollie.org , chock-full of good information. Or more locally, www.canadianbordercollies.org . Good luck...
