Mick is throwing up pink liquid (with some pine needles)

Recommended Posts

I came home from lunch today to let him out, and there were puddles of pink liquid throughout the house. The biggest puddle was about 2' across in the living room. There were a couple dozen pine needles mixed in with it.

I can't think of anything weird he could have gotten into (besides a pine tree, which he likes to sleep under). He was shaking really bad when I first got home, but I think he thought he would get in trouble for making a "mess." He's since stopped shaking, but is acting pretty more sedate than usual. He's only 13 months old, so he's usually pretty hyper when I take him out on lunch break. I have a vet appointment at 4, and I'm staying home the rest of the day with him.

Do you think he'll be okay until then?

Goodness, that pink liquid may be traces of blood and the shaking could be a symptom of alot of pain. I would take him in immediately. JMO.

I'm worried about the pink, but he's stopped shaking. It was his "I think I'm in big trouble" shake. Once he realized, he wasn't getting yelled at, he stopped. The vet office said I could bring him in for observation, but there won't be anyone to see him until 4. I'm keeping an eye on him, and needless to say, not going back to work this afternoon.

Just a thought for others who may be in a similar situation: Even if the vet can't see him for an appointment until 4, if you are really concerned about him, you could take him in for observation. Presumably that means someone would be checking on him and if he took a turn for the worse and became an emergency case, the vet would look at him. If I thought that were not the case with my vet, I'd be considering another vet. (In other words, though it may not be an emergency at this moment, if it should become one and he was already at the vet's office, then the vet could stop what s/he's doing to react to the emergency.

Try an animal emergency clinic. And find a new vet!

Still nothing? Worry worry worry!

I agree with moving to another vet. If my vet had said that I would have told them where they could go, put my dog in a car and went to the nearest emergency clinic. Any vet who says that isnt worth a grain of salt.

To be fair to the vet, IME it's not the vet that does the refusing--it's the front office staff (I have a good story about that one--and it's an instance where what happened did cause me to change vets). I wouldn't blame the vet unless I knew for a fact s/he was the one refusing to see my dog. Probably if you showed up with an obviously sick animal, they'd work you in at that time, which is why I would have gone ahead and headed to the vet.

Anyway, I hope the pup is okay.

Any news? I always hate waiting to hear. It's the worst part of the vets office.

I posted an update in the other thread last night, but Mick is okay. It looks like it was just a scratch in his throat from the pine needles. In fact, just before he left for the vet, he started running around and eating. It ended up being an expensive scare.

He's been 100% since. Did a great job at his herding lesson the next day, and is currently running around like a fool outside with his frisbee.
