Hello again everyone  Alfie now has had all his injections and has got over his worms etc :D However, now that i can take him out he will not wee or poop outside, but does it the minute we walk back into the house. I have tried taking him out after every meal, playing, waking etc but no joy, he waits until we go back in. He is only young I know but I dont want him to think that the house is the toilet for him. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks jill

How long do you keep him out? What's the weather been like? If it's been rainy out or something, sometimes that can discourage puppies from going outside. Maybe try walking him a bit--that will sometimes encourage him to go. Or if he gets distracted maybe try just standing in place until he does his business. Try to stay outside until he goes and praise like crazy. Or, if you're outside for awhile and he doesn't go, put him in his crate as soon as you get inside, wait a few minutes, and then take him outside and try again. Repeat until he goes and praise like crazy! Don't let him get into the habit of going inside. Bad behaviors are harder to eliminate once they become habit.

When he eventually does go outside make sure you are armed with treats to throw a potty party, and when you see him go inside make sure you let him know it is not what you want. Our foster cannot feel it yet, but when she potty's outside (due to timing) she gets excited because she knows it is right, and she gets that guilty look when she pottys inside. When she can feel it she will know which choice is better. (It worked on our other dogs)

Can you pick him up mid pee to take him outside and then tell him how good he is? I got peed on doing this w/ Twist, but it made sense to her.

A crate is an absolute must for every Border Collie that is living inside. It will be the second home until your dog can be trusted. Throwing the potty party is great advice. From what I have seen of others and my own experience, 3 months is about the magic age for being fully house trained. Good luck and keep patient.
