Mark Billadeau
The land we purchased has a state installed livestock water system. There is a concrete basin fed by underground lines where the water percolates up in the center, fills the basin up to a vertical drain pipe and the drain exits under the basin into a nearby stream. One or more of the feed lines have become plugged or have collapsed; the water flow into the basin is reduced and we have water percolating up in the field. Where can I find diagrams for this type of water system so I can figure out what I'll need to fix our system? I'd like to have everything on hand when I start digging. Are the lines clay tiles covered with tar paper, flexable perforated plastic drain tile, straight pipe with holes, etc? What is used to direct the percolating water into the lines: gravel & perforated pipe, or _______? Mark
greenakeys
Have you tried speaking with the local soil conservation folks? They probably had something to do with installing the system and could tell you where to go to find out about them. I have something similar at my farm, I just stuck a long piece of rebar down into the bottom of the concrete tank where the water comes in and dislodged some of the muck and it started filling up again. Mine needs to be cleaned out too. I bet a plumber with some kind of drain clearing snake thing could easily clean out the pipe. My question is how to keep algae from growing like crazy in the basin? Perhaps if your system is leaking there is a broken pipe there between the spring and the basin. Maybe freeze damage? The land we purchased has a state installed livestock water system. Mark Billadeau
The system is now fixed after a not so fun holiday weekend. One of the lines (4" perforated flexible black pipe) had collapsed near one of the springs. Down stream from this near where 3 lines join, a 2.5' long section of white perforated pipe was clogged with roots. I'm really out of shape for this much manual labor. juliepoudrier
Are you able to move today? It sure doesn't sound like a fun weekend, but I guess it's one of those jobs that just can't be avoided.... J.
Mark Billadeau
I'm moving very slowly; just about everything aches. The ducks are not happy with me; the puddles in the field are now dry. Now I won't worry about the watering system going dry during the summer. The spring where the line had collapsed was flowing with at least as much water as what comes out of a garden hose.
