TWrider
While training pups, mine are 14 monthes, when do you start teaching them whistles? They are doing small outruns, have good downs, recalls, know thier flanks (some times need a small reminder, like a raised hand, etc..) and are learning thier walk ups and there's. They have worked at several different sites on several different types of sheep and are being pretty consistent. And if they are ready to start on whistles which one should I start with? Recall, down, etc???

You don't want to do too much with hand signla as you don't want the dog looking at you. Certainly initially body language plays a role. Good luck - Vergil

Vergil Holland
Can you elaborate on what you do to put whistles to commands? Whistle followed by verbal command? Thanks! Start by giving the command, then the whistle then the command. You will then want to "mix it up" a little, substituting body language for the verbal command. Hope that helps!
