People guarding

Recommended Posts

I have a bc cross she is a rescue about 15-18 months old and I've had her about a year. She recently started (resource?) guarding me from other dogs- like dogs that come to me for a pet @ the park or a neighbors dog all are friendly dogs. She snaps and snarls and just go after them- I think it mostly just noisy but it scares me and the other owners. She has issues with bones and other dogs but people can walk up and take bones w/o issues so I haven't done anything about it.

I'm kinda afraid to take her anywhere with other dogs.

I forgot to say I have another dog whose just turned 2 and they are the best of friends.

I think the short answer would be: this is not acceptable behaviour and she has to be told. If my dog isn't otherwise engaged, she will usually intercept another dog if it comes to me to be petted, her nose between its and my hand, but I let her know that it's ok and to leave it alone, which she reluctantly does. She's just protecting me and being bossy.

Have you done any training with your puppy? It sounds like it would be important for you to (re)establish your position within the pack as "leader" so that you move on from a fear-based motivation to a confidence-based one.

I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you,

Good luck!
