bailey44
I have always played discrimination games with Polly. Here is how it went today: I threw pink ball and glo ball for her. She normally waits for me to ask which one to fetch and a good time is had by all. Me: Polly, fetch glo ball! Polly: Chews on glo ball.. Me: Polly, fetch glo ball, c'mon girl! Polly: Sniffs pink ball, starts to chew on pink ball. Me: (shocked) attempts a few more times... Me: ok. no good for that game. I trade out glo ball for rope. Now we have pink ball and rope. I throw them. Me: Polly! Fetch pink ball. She does this happily. Me: Polly! Fetch rope. Polly: (Staring.) But you have a ball. Me: Polly! Fetch rope! Polly: But. you. have. a. ball. Me: (whining) Po--l-l-y....Fetch rope! Polly: (Staring.) I have no knowledge of a rope in this area. I put the ball away and bring out purple bone. Throw rope and purple bone. Me: Fetch purple bone! Polly: Chews on purple bone and ignores me. Me: (In a fake sweet voice as I put rope away and let her sit and chew on purple bone; "Well, aren't we mommy's little jerk today, oh, yes oh yes she is, she's the worse dog in the world...) Polly: Wags her tail at my "praise" and chews on purple bone. Who won that one folks??? Hope it's just a phase Charlene
JackoDog
Oh my. Sounds like Jacko. He brings a to have thrown, we throw it, tell him to go get X toy (we work on discriminating between items as well) and then he brings it back and we start over. Good times huh? Except that now he doesn't want to bring it back, he wants to chew on it. Yes, I feel your pain. I really, really do.
Lunar
Yeah, that was Oreo all her life. She couldn't pick out a toy, but that was fine with me since we never got past the fetch stage. "Oreo fetch!" [Oreo runs, grabs it, runs halfway back, chews on it, wanders off.] "Oreo? Oreo?" Yep. Fun.

BustopherJones
ROFL! It reminds me of Annie's first (and second) behavior in a local frisbee competition. Now, you all know how the competition works, so I won't bore you with the rules. Remember that Annie loves people and other animals (regardless of species). On the first try, I got off a beautiful long-range throw. Annie made a magnificent airborne catch, all 4 paws off the ground with a half-gainer and a full twist at the end. Then, she proceeded to the sidelines where she said hello to the other dogs, and their owners, and the specatators, and the judges, and anyone else in the environs, all this while carrying the frisbee in her mouth and ingoring my calls to bring the frisbee back. Needless to say, we did not win the competition; but we all got a good laugh. Nowadays, we simply watch, while she sits in my lap...
