OffTopic
Well. Guess I can stop worrying about this, because yesterday Finn figured out how to work, er, "it" and they tied. Briefly, but they did. I've been trying to let them out seperately, but he managed to squeeze past me and into the yard with her. And of course, I have to take the diaper off of her when I let her out, so there was no "barrier" in his way. There should only be a day or two left before Lizzie goes into the last stage of heat, which I hope means she'll start to fend him off. And then 2 weeks after she's done her little butt is going to the vet to get spayed. I wish they'd do it sooner, but my vet said she likes to wait an extra week just to make sure all the blood vessels and hormone levels are back to normal. I do hope they continue to play with each other after this is over. Guess it was a good bonding experience for them.
kelpiegirl
I just wanted to mention one thing- Brucellosis. It warrants mentioning, I think, because it can cause illness in males and females, and thusly, any dogs who have bred (even if neutered, can contract this, and then spread it). It is also a Zoonosis. So, that said, allowing neutered males to copulate/breed/tie, with bitches in heat, could spread a disease that there is no treatment for. http://www.bobmckee.com/Client%20Info/Infe...rucellosis.html
OffTopic
Guess it's too late to worry about that, too, then.
bcnewe2
My neutered male (neutered as a young pup) happily tied with one of my fosters who showed up here in heat, so it can definitely happen. Of course once he had done the deed he looked very confused about the whole thing . Micks been neutered since he was about 15 months old. He was never used as a stud. I am under the impression that they remove the testicles when they neutered him, he has nothing down there. When his younger sis came into heat the first time I heard what I thought was Dew screaming in pain outside on the porch one morning (there are no dogs in our area so I felt safe letting her out for a second while I was getting coffee) . I ran outside and there I found the 2 of them tied on the porch. Mick looked satisfied, Dew looked scarred and I'm sure I looked shocked! We now consider it safe sex but I still wonder if it's really ok. This last heat she never really seemed to go into the accepting stage except for her brother. She will let her big bro do anything to her (dumb lil sis that she is). She never flagged any other dog or showed other behaviors that would make me think she was open but I'm sure she was. I've been pondering the idea of spaying her just for the hassle factors. But I also dream about the day I might be educated enough and she might be good enough to breed. Don't know which will come first, me tiring of keeping her safe or living up to my dream of being able to at least ponder the idea of breeding her. Good luck and I'd be watching your new girl closely. I would think she could easily get stressed out with all the new things in her new enviroment. She doesn't need a new boy up her bum to boot! Kristen eta: I just wanted to mention one thing- Brucellosis. It warrants mentioning, If Mick has never tied with any other bitches and Dew has never tied with any other dogs, do I still have to worry about Brucellosis? workindogs
Brucellosis is quite rare....however, if you know of a dog/bitch that was ever let out on the prowl to breed whatever cur/skank on the street, then beware. It's an STD....think about who your partner might have been with...controlled or uncontrolled.
