Mean, Cruel Dog

Recommended Posts

Yes, I'm being tormented. I've been sick the last couple of days, and do I get any sympathy from my supposed best friend? Not on your life: it's "come on, let's go play in all that nice fresh snow", accompanied by pathetic whines, pitiful looks, and accidental (hint, hint) nosings around of squeaky tennis balls . So I finally drag my aching body off the couch, put on jacket, boots, gloves, and woolly hat, and go out to toss the tennis ball. Well, guess who can't FIND her darned ball under a foot of snow, and whines until I take pity on her and dig it out.

I hoped she'd learn from that, but no. It's more whines & pitiful looks, this time towards the leash. So finally I get up and stagger a couple miles around the neighborhood, with SBF alternating between "come on, can't you go any faster" and "OK, stop, I've got to spend 5 minutes sniffing this".

Anyway, what do you all do when you're sick? Any suggestions will be considered, short of driving 5 miles and dropping her off to find her own way home.

I don't think I'll be much help. Missy just curls up and takes a nap with me. She does get a bit antsy after a couple days, but for just a day or two she is very understanding.

In your situation I'd probably use a crate and frozen kongs. And maybe invest in a soft frisbee that won't get lost as easily in the snow.

One other idea - if you're desperate to keep her entertained for a few minutes you could hide treats, or even kibble, all over a room then let her in to find and eat.

Just last week, I was feeling a little down and my 2 (now) seem to notice that. Mom's in bed. Ut oh. Usually it's go go go, but I put on the old comforter and let them up on the bed- big treat for them! They quietly napped when I did. I only had 5 toys surrounding me when I awoke. A record!! That first walk to the park was a quick one though. Didn't take long to poop them out. Hope you're feeling better.

We play a modified game of fetch on the bed. I toss the ball, he catches it. Over and over and over....

To mix it up, I try faking him out and try to throw past him. He does a great job of intercepting the toy despite my attempts and very few get past him. This seems to keep him sufficiently entertained.

Chewies will also occupy him.

If he's really being a pest when I'm not feeling well, I tell him to go to his crate and he does.

Do you have anyone in your family who lives near by or a friend who would be willing to help you out? That's what I did w/ my first dog when I lived by myself.

I had the flu really badly a few years back and basically spent an entire weekend in bed totally out of commission. I had like five comforters on the bed and fleece pajamas and still couldn't throw off the chill and even dragging myself to the bathroom to pee felt like torture.

But, the dogs had to be walked. It would take me two hours to psych myself up to get out of bed, put some real pants on, grab my coat, and stagger out to the alley behind my building. Did I mention there was a foot of snow on the ground?

The dogs were great. Solo and Fly laid by my bed all weekend with round, worried eyes and didn't make a peep. Skeeter the Papillon, who I still had at the time, curled up next to me under the covers and helped keep me warm without complaint. I admit I was surprised.

Now that I have a puppy in the house, I doubt I'll get off as easily next time I'm sick.

Oh, and I forgot to say: Zeeke keeps eating my dang tissues!!! I am going through tissues like CRAZY, I have this big pile beside me at all times, and every time I so much as turn my back he sneaks over and grabs one and eats it. I am in no position to go chasing him around for them. The bugger knows it too, because he never used to grab them right out from under me. Thank goodness for the spray bottle.

Ugghhh, snotty tissues. WHY??

I also am getting over a cold of a week and a half. Do you suppose we can catch things from each other on the Internet?! (Computer viruses?)

Thursday and Friday I didn't go to work. I teach 8th grade, and I remember how weird and disgusting the general adult population seemed to me when I was that age - never mind a teacher-adult who is dripping from her eyes and nose and has to get up every 5 minutes to blow or wipe something.

Did Buddy care or sympathize!? No! In fact, because I was home, he demanded weekend-style walks: long, every few hours, to exotic locations I can't visit on a work day. Thursday it was well below freezing, with a biting wind chill. And there I am, walking the dog with my eyes dripping, my nose running, worried that the tears are actually going to freeze to my face. Grrr!

Zicam and Oscillococcinum are my best friends this time of year. If I do get sick, the dogs are generally ok with short potty walks and treat dispensing toys. Z's a snuggler and Maggie is just easy going, so it works out pretty well.

Ummmm i can sympathise, i have been ill too since after Christmas. DH was ill Boxing day and then kindly gave it too me!!

I think of the dogs as kids really when i am ill, not that i treat them like kids, i mean that if you have kids and you are ill then you have to try and carry on and the same is for the dogs sort of. Although it has been really tough , i have fealt awful and although Holly has been great and not had as many walks as usual and she is very good when i am ill. Zac has been a lively little puppy and so it has been hard keeping him amuzed. I must admit i got my mum round one day whilst i was at home and DH was at work just to help out a bit and so i could spend some time one on one with Holly whilst she played with Zac.

It has been nice having two dogs though as they have entertained each other a lot.

I am just trying to catch up on here now to see what i have missed.

I hope everyone else feels better soon, sounds like we all have or have had the flu!!

Clicker train anything I can come up with. Last year I was sick in bed for two weeks. I took my friend's kids tricycle, turned it iupside and free shaped Corey to spin the wheel with her paw. Then I taught her to spin the wheel by pushing the pedal with her foot, then I changed and got her to stand in the back of it; then I taught her to spin the wheel by pushing the pedal iwth her nose - all by free shaping - all the mental exercises tires her out and she is quite happy to spend a lot of time snoozing with me. Then when she was done, I worked the other dogs. What was the usefulness of this whole thing, some might asked? I got to give me dog a good workout without leaving the bed or the couch. Next day I worked with a chair, a box, a bowl, etc. All three of my dogs were quite content the full two weeks as mentally I was able to tire them out.

Boy can I relate to this thread today! I got sick suddenly last Thursday am with a 104 temp, and have stayed sick. I finally broke down and went to urgent care yesterday at the urging of my husband, and found out that I have PNEUMONIA!

So with my hacking cough and total fatigue, I'm afraid nobody's gotten much excercise. It's been backyard to potty, then back inside to snuggle with me on the couch. Ling missed two agility sessions this weekend, and there's been no frisbee. Normally when I'm sick, I can at least do that, but I'm pretty much bedridden. So from the couch, I can still throw a toy, and I can still ask the dogs to do stuff to keep their minds busy. But I've been making more use of bones, bully sticks and feeding meals with treat dispensing balls than I usually do.

Frankly, since it's pretty rare that I get sick and I've never been THIS sick, I don't really think it's going to scar my dogs a lot to go without walks around the block, even if it's for a week. But that could be the bacteria talking.

There is some virus going around making everyone sick as a dog. No pun intended. A lot of people had it during the Holidays, but it seems to still be going around. And some people are getting secondary bacterial infections from it.

hmm that sucks. I just got sick yesterday. It's a cough and fatigue with sore muscles. Didn't help that I chopped, moved, and stacked so much wood today. Cant afford propane this year so it's been one fireplace to heat the house and I spent about 4 hours gathering wood in the cold today. I know im going to feel like crap tomorrow. And with Mick, the puppy, wanting to wake up early and me not being able to sleep very well...

Yeah i reckon that is what has happened to me, either that or i have picked up another bug. :D

Trying to speak too or communicate with two dogs with a cough is so annoying, they look at you so strange whilst you have a coughing fit. Mind you what must we sound/look like to them!!

Clara - That sounds awful, hope you feel better soon.

Oh and Brandon, i hope you are not as bad today as you thought you would be. I know how hard it is to keep a pup amuzed when you feel dreadful.

What a great 2008 start for us all!!

My Skyler would be very patient with me when I was ill. He knew what was going on and would play by himself. His demeanor would be very gentle with me as well and he never complained. Then again he was a human with canine tendencies rather than a dog.
